MODA BLOCKHEADS 5: Week 4

Welcome back to Blockheads Week 4. Our blocks are already growing and as always, I am surprised how quickly this block collection multiplies, aren’t you?

This week’s designer is Corey Yoder of Coriander Quilts and her block is called SUPER SCRAPPY STAR. Be sure to check out her BLOG, where I’m certain she will have all the details and tips on her lovely [and scrappy] block!

BLOCK #4: SUPER SCRAPPY STAR

CHOOSING FABRICS:

As the name suggests, you can really go entirely scrappy with this block! If you’ve followed me for awhile, you know this is right up my alley so I was quite happy with the opportunity to do so!

Because we are sticking with a limited color palette of red, green, and cream, we decided to choose scrappy greens in varying shades for the border and scrappy reds for the inner sawtooth star. As for background, we stayed with an IVORY SOLID to give your eyes a resting place, which I feel is especially important in this 6″ finished block size.

PIECING INSTRUCTIONS:

As always, I converted the flying geese to my trusty SEW & FLIP METHOD, rather than the 4-at-a-time method in step 1 of the PDF pattern. This would be the only change I did this week and the rest of the pieces are cut the same as in the original pattern.

So for the 6″ block you would need:

  • (4) 1 ½” x 2 ½” ivory solid [B]
  • (8) 1 ½” red squares [C]
  • (4) red [A] squares same as pattern size
  • (20) green [A] squares same as pattern size
  • (4) ivory solid [D] squares same as pattern size

And for the 12″ block you would need:

  • (4) 2 ½” x 4 ½” ivory solid [B]
  • (8) 2 ½” red squares [C]
  • (4) red [A] squares same as pattern size
  • (20) green [A] squares same as pattern size
  • (4) ivory solid [D] squares same as pattern size

Fabric Collections:

  • Scrappy Reds: Figs & Shirtings, Christmas Stitched, Christmas Figs II, and Eyelet Basics [arriving this November!]
  • Scrappy Greens: Fresh Fig Favorites, Honeysweet, Christmas Figs II, Fruit Cocktail, Christmas Stitched, Farmhouse II, Eyelet Basics, Bella Solid in GRASS GREEN, and since it is Corey’s block, we added in a pretty “X” print favorite from her SUNWASHED collection!
  • Background: IVORY SOLID
