STRAWBERRY GARDEN BOOK: FIG FRIEND FEATURE – WEEK 5

It’s week 5 of our Fig Friend Feature – this time, its the COTTAGE BLOOMS QUILT time to shine!

Finished Size: 51 1/2″ x 63 1/2″ – Pieced by Carol Shriver and Quilted by Diana Johnson

COTTAGE BLOOMS uses one of my all time favorite blocks, the WEATHERVANE block, and I will never get tired of new interpretations of this one!

This was a lovely project to dream up as I wanted something soft and romantic and also classic and timeless. We considered several colors for the sashing and the posts to make sure they didn’t overpower the blocks. Remember that with a sashing this thick… it will really make all the difference to a quilt what fabrics are chosen there so be sure to audition several choices.

Let’s learn a little about our STRAWBERRY GARDEN BOOK contributor… Carol Shriver. She can be found on Instagram at @cshriver870 where she is very active in her many beautiful projects, teaches applique and is a wonderful cheerleader to many in our Facebook Group. Thank you Carol!

1- Tell me your favorite quilt block and if there is a reason that is so.

My favorite quilt block is the Dresden plate. I love pointed ones, curved ones, and every variation along the way!  The wedges are such great scrap-busters, and they are fun to chain sew. A little television watching is the perfect time to turn the points.

2- Tell me a bit about how you found quilting.

I have sewed since junior high and my sewing runs from garments to home decor with lots of handwork added in. I was purchasing lots of Layer Cakes for fabric choices for purse/bag making when I decided I needed to use the ones that were no longer available. Quilt making was my answer. As they say, the rest is history!

3- Tell me your favorite Fig Tree color and a reason if there is one.

I struggle to choose a favorite color. I love scrappy quilting, but I must have all the fabrics in a controlled genre. I love Joanna’s Jelly and Jam fabrics because of all the beautiful colors. They all are screaming to get in my next quilt!

4- If you were to suddenly have unlimited time, could drop everything and make one of the quilts in the book from start to finish… which one would it be and why?

I will be sewing along (in scrappy fashion, of course) with the bowtie sew along. I also will be participating in the Strawberry Garden BOM from Fat Quarter Shop.  I can’t wait for that! I love making samplers! Won’t those two pillow designs from the book be a darling compliment to the quilt?  I can see them all on my sun porch!

……

Stay tuned for our final FIG FRIEND FEATURE next week!
