The June issue of American Patchwork & Quilting (APQ) is LIVE, again exploring the conversation on modern vs. traditional quilting!

For this issue, I invited my dear friend Jen Kingwell to join me to talk about the continuum of traditional and modern quilting. I have been a fan of Jen’s and her unique scrappy quilt interpretations from the moment I met her and was so happy she agreed to join this conversation.

I have to say that I am having so much fun talking to all of my modern friends about how they view the relationship between traditional and modern, the history of quilting, how we view color and design the same and where we differ. I am learning so much about them and about myself as we work on each issue!

For this issue, Jen and I decided to design quilts using the Churn Dash block. I decided to play with color in an unusual way so that even though the pieces are still a churn dash, the color placement makes it look like a totally different block.

Jen chose to elongate and enlarge her churn dash to create a unique and very cool block! You will definitely want to check out this issue of APQ to see her quilt, along with the directions, in case you want to make it. Most importantly, you will get to read about the conversation Jen and I had about her views on modern quilting and her work. See her beautiful interpretation below.

As a reminder, this is the 3rd installment for APQ. Here are links to the first 2 blog posts in case you missed them:

Does the chambray shrink at a different rate from the quilting cotton? If so, is there any special handling required to avoid issues?
