‘MINI’ JOLLY BAR HEARTS w/FAT QUARTER SHOP

JOLLY BAR DAY

New to what a JOLLY BAR is? It’s a Fat Quarter Shop exclusive precut that includes 42 pieces of fabric measuring 5″ x 10″ [rectangular]. That means it’s half a layer cake -or- double of a charm pack! They are so handy and offer many possibilities for your sewing projects.

Now comes JOLLY BAR DAY. This is now officially May 10th of each year! Get it? The precut is 5″ x 10″, and May is the 5th month, and celebrated on the 10th day. They are so clever over there at FQS, aren’t they?!

With the early arrival [SURPISE!] of my SUMMER’S END fabric, we decided to use this collection alongside my IVORY WITH LATTE EYELET BASIC as the block background [I recommend 3/4 yd. for this project].

PATTERN VARIATION

As you may notice, we have changed the pattern up a bit and made it MINI! The original blocks finish at 16″ square, while ours finish at 8″.

We love giving you all a little something extra around here. 🙂

If you’d like to follow our project, follow all FQS block assembly instructions on page 1 and 2, with the following cutting substitutions:

• Cut 18 – 5″ x 10″ rectangles into:
  • (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles – 72 total [Fabric A]
• Cut background fabric into:
  • (18) 4″ squares [Fabric B]
  • (36) 1 1/2″ squares [Fabric C]
• Do not cut Fabric D, E, or F for now. We will use the 3×3 grid layout [“Lap Quilt”] on page 5 of the pattern for these.

This will create (9) total 8 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ unfinished JOLLY BAR HEARTS blocks. Of course, you will have extras from your JOLLY BAR and could easily make this project larger or create more blocks for other fun, smaller projects, such as project bags, potholders, placemats, etc.

Move to page 5 of the pattern, follow all FQS quilt assembly instructions, with the following cutting substitutions for finishing:

• Cut sashing and border fabric into:
  • (6) 1 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ rectangles [Fabric D]
  • (2) 1 1/2″ x 26 1/2″ strips [Fabric E1]
  • (2) 1 1/2″ x 26 1/2″ strips [Fabric E2]
  • (2) 1 1/2″ x 28 1/2″ strips [Fabric E3]
• Cut binding fabric into:
  • (4) 2 1/4″ x WOF strips [Fabric F]

Our quilt finishes at 28 1/2″ x 28 1/2″.
