MODA BLOCKHEADS 5: GROUP 2 – WEEK 4

This week’s designer is Barbara Groves of Me & My Sister Designs and her block is called MORNING STAR. Visit Barb and her sister, Mary, at their website HERE to see other quilt patterns and design inspiration.

OUR BLOCK #4: MORNING STAR (6″ Finished)

……

PIECING INSTRUCTIONS:

As usual, I use the SEW & FLIP METHOD for HSTs and flying geese units, so I did not follow step 2 and 3, using the 4-at-a-time method, as depicted in the MODA pattern.

If you prefer the SEW & FLIP method, eliminate the cutting instructions for: [D], [E], [F], and [G]. Instead:

For a 6″ block, cut:

  • (4) 1.5″ x 2.5″ rectangles [D]
  • (8) 1.5″ squares [E]
  • (4) 1.5 x 2.5″ rectangles [F]
  • (8) 1.5″ squares [G]

For a 12″ block, cut:

  • (4) 2.5″ x 4.5″ rectangles [D]
  • (8) 2.5″ squares [E]
  • (4) 2.5 x 4.5″ rectangles [F]
  • (8) 2.5″ squares [G]

If you need a refresher on the SEW & FLIP METHOD, I am adding a link to one of my YouTube Channel videos, where I work on flying geese units for our STITCHERY SAMPLER quilt. Check it out!

OUR BLOCKHEADS SETTING:

We gave you a few details about our MBH5 setting, including the number of blocks and sizes, in our WEEK 3 BLOG POST from part 1 of this series. Please refer to that post for all the initial info if you are wanting to follow along on our setting. You don’t have to do exactly the same blocks that I have, just as long as you have the amounts that I tell you for this setting.

TODAY I want to share a bit more about what fabrics you will need to have so you can be ready along with me when the time comes! Please note that the materials below do not include the fabrics you are using for you blocks… just what you will need for all of the sashing, borders, etc in order to set it like we will.

And since several of you have asked… the setting is a “straight” setting, not on point, does not add any additional colors and is very straightforward.

……

SETTING MATERIALS LIST:

  • SCRAPPY SASHING: Total 1 yd, but to mimic the scrappy sparkle we are going to do you will need (8) ⅛ yds of a variety cream, ivory, and off-white prints with light and delicate red and red/green accents. Think little red dots or stars, small ditsy, very delicate lines or geometrics.
  • POSTS: ¼ yd. small cream print with red accents. Can be a tiny bit stronger than the sashing, but not too strong.
  • BLOCK SASHING: ½ yd. IVORY SOLID or FIG TREE EYELET with tan dots
  • BORDER: ¾ yd. delicate cream with red or red/green accents
  • BINDING: ⅝ yd. small red print
  • BACKING: 4 ⅛ yds of your favorite Christmas print

Notice that all of the fabrics are cream and ivory prints other than the binding! All of this cream goodness will make our red and green blocks sparkle and shine!
