TUTORIAL: HOLIDAY-THEMED FOOD SAVERS/CASSEROLE COVERS

These quick food savers or casserole covers [all depending on the size] are so fun to make with some Christmas fabric leftovers. Just grab any Christmas fat quarter and add a little Christmas “wrapping” to whatever you are bringing to your holiday potluck!

SUPPLIES

• (1) Fat Quarter Seasonal Print [Front]
  • We used our nostalgic Christmas card running yardage from my BUON NATALE collection due in stores May 2025.
• (1) Fat Quarter [Lining]
• (1) Fat Quarter [Bias Binding]
  • We cut our bias binding at 2″ and pressed to create double-fold binding.
• Scrap Batting
• Heat-Erasable Pen
• 1/4″ Elastic
• Safety Pin

TUTORIAL

• Create a quilt sandwich using your fat quarter seasonal print [right side up], scrap batting, and fat quarter lining [right side down].
  • A fat quarter should be plenty of fabric for most bowl/casserole dishes, but feel free to adjust up or down as needed.
• Quilt as desired.
  • We did a 1″ crosshatch quilting design on our domestic machine.
• Take your preferred bowl/casserole dish [top down] and lay it on your quilted sandwich. Using a heat-erasable pen [we use FRIXION PENS], mark all the way around your dish. Then, use a ruler to mark an additional 1 1/2″ around the circumference for overage. Cut your shape out using this outer line. Press to remove any leftover markings.
• Create your bias binding, making double-fold tape.
  • A fat quarter should create plenty of binding for several covers. We cut our binding at 2″.
• Open and press bias binding end in 1/2″ before beginning to pin to quilted shape. Pin [opened] bias binding all around the edge and overlap where you started by approximately 1″ and cut off excess.
• Stitch directly on the fold line nearest the edge of your quilted shape. Continue all the way around. Fold your bias tape over and stitch your binding in place to the back of your shape. This time, leave an approximate 1″ opening to feed the elastic through.
• To measure elastic, run the elastic around the top edge of your chosen bowl/dish and make a rough cut. Attach a safety pin to one edge of the elastic and use this to assist in feeding it through the bias binding opening.
• Once the elastic has made its way through the binding, cinch the elastic and use the safety pin to hold the two ends in place. Test the cover over your preferred bowl/dish to check fit. Adjust as needed to your preference. Then, stitch the two ends of elastic together and trim excess. Tuck the elastic into the binding opening.
• Hand sew your opening shut.
• Voila!
