VINTAGE FRIENDSHIP STARS SEW ALONG: WEEK ONE

Welcome to Week One of our VINTAGE FRIENDSHIP STARS sew along!

In case this is your first time here on the blog, be sure to check our previous (2) posts for lots of tips and guidance on getting started with this project. Most of the work of this quilt is picking out a good grouping of colors and low volumes to recreate the feel of the vintage quilt we fell in love with.

TIPS & HINTS

I am sure I am repeating myself and I have said this somewhere already, but with a vintage scrappy quilt like this one, the beauty of the project is in the “make do” scrappy nature of the quilt. Clearly the maker worked with what she had and added to the quilt as she had fabrics and time. That is what I fell in love with. Susan said it perfectly in the Facebook Group this morning when she said…

“I saw a question posted asking if you could just make all of the blocks single fabric, or all scrappy. I suppose you could, but I wouldn’t recommend it. If you used all single fabric blocks I think your quilt wouldn’t be as interesting as it could be, and if you used all scrappy, you’d definitely get the scrappy feel, but you’d miss the opportunity to kind of rest your eye. Maybe it’s just me, but in the single fabric blocks I see the quilter using up what she had available in her scrap basket when she sat down to sew. I kind of like the feeling of being like her.”

I completely agree and I think that the mix of the two kinds of blocks is part of what makes this quilt so attractive to us as when we look at it.

As for my progress, so far this weekend I cut out most of my fabrics into the needed pieces and today I will start to assemble them into the first “full blocks”. I will post my progress in the group!

STARTER BUNDLES

We still have a few starter bundles left IN THE SHOP if you are still working on choosing your feature color or securing your cream low volumes – while supply lasts! The colors are running out but we will continue to replenish the low volume bundles since they are so versatile and can be used for pretty much any fabric combination!

Just wondering how scrappy the blocks should be? Use 2 or 3 blues in the same block or ?? Any suggestions?
    Thanks
