WEEK THREE: HAPPY HOLLY

Gah… I love this holly block so much. It is simple and clever and gives anything a seasonal vibe!

If it looks familiar to some of you, there is a reason for that. It is an edited version of a block that I first featured in my TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS BOM. Those of you who were a part of that program will remember it well… I do believe you had to make quite a few for the featured border on that quilt!

Here in this project, it is a slightly simplified version of that block, and I am loving how the new version turned out.

……

TIPS/HINTS/SUGGESTIONS

A few things to think about as you are making this one:

  • You for sure want to have 2 tones of green [or any other color you are using] for the leaves. You just want to make sure that there is enough variation on those 2 fabrics that you can tell one side of the leaf from the other.
  • When piecing your block, pay attention that you are lining up your pieces correctly, with one fabric/color on one side and the other color on the other side.
  • You can of course use any half square triangle method you prefer, but I have found that cutting slightly bigger and trimming is the perfect way to go for half square triangles every time. I am not normally a huge fan of over cutting and trimming, but think its definitely the way to go for half square triangle units. Every time!
  • If you are using a different color scheme, like all winter blues for example, I would use the darkest of your 3 tones for the berries to give them a chance to shine!

IMPORTANT HOLLY QUANTITY NOTE:

You might be wondering why we only have 3 blocks on the photo and not six…

This week and next week’ blocks are both the same height and can be alternated [which is what we will be doing on our final version]. So if you like the sound of that option [or you just want to give yourself the option to choose] you will be making just 3 HAPPY HOLLY blocks like we are and leaving 3 blocks for next week.

Alternatives to our “MIXED ROW” for the final layout will be an “ALL HOLLY BLOCK ROW” like the amounts on the PDF pattern suggest or an “ALL ALTERNATE BLOCK ROW” that will be shared next week.

So…follow the info on the pattern for amounts if you love the holly and the seasonal vibe – OR- JUST MAKE 3 if you are unsure and want to see what next week’s option brings!

I am reading the pattern and it says if you want to alternate the Holly and next weeks block be sure to read the blog for important information. I can’t find any information on that.

Hello. I paid for week 3 holly but can not find where to download load it. I went into my account and when I download it, I get the receipt, not the pattern
Please email the pattern to me in a pdf
    Thanks.

Hello! The pattern would be going to the same place as the 2 previous weeks. You should have an email confirmation with the link. If you cannot locate that I would look in your spam filter. If you need to redownload it, it is in your Fig tree account under REVIEW ORDERS. Be sure to click on the big blue arrow to redownload. If you have already downloaded, you will need to see where your pattern is downloading to on your device. If you are on a phone and having trouble, I would recommend a larger device. If you are on an ipad, the downloads go to a predetermined file on your device when you download. Often that is called files.

I cant order week 3 because I cant retype password because I cant see what was used for weeks 1 & 2. I don’t know why Im having so many issues. I wish you had just done a 1 & done payment system. This a lot of bother .

You create your own password… so hopefully you can remember what you created. If you can’t remember, you can email us and we can reset it for you to something standard. That usually takes 24 hours.
