In case you missed it, we skipped last week for a little break, block 22 [SECOND STAR], which was designed by Jackie MacDonald of SWEETFIRE ROAD. You can check out her blog post, featuring her block, HERE.
This week’s designer is Sarah Watts of RUBY STAR SOCIETY and her block is called FALLING STAR. Be sure to check out Sarah’s WEBSITE to learn all about what she has to offer!

Instead of scrappy half-square triangle (HST) units, I opted for flying geese to eliminate a few seams in this 6″ block. If you’d like to follow along with me, eliminate cutting for [F], [G], [H], and [J]. Instead:
For a 6″ block, cut:
For a 12″ block, cut:
Use the SEW & FLIP method to create (4) flying geese units.

One other change this week, and it relates to the foundation paper pieced (FPP) unit…
You will notice that the “shooting star” effect and the way you piece an FPP unit (by pressing to one side), creates a bit of bulk in the lower right corner, and is far more noticeable in the smaller block size. To alleviate, I added a 1 1/4″ square of background fabric and created a SEW & FLIP corner. I was able to cut away the large fabric bulk, without taking away too much from the overall effect.
This is one of those “let’s make it easier and less stressful” kind of moments if you ask me!
See below how I auditioned this idea!
