SUPER SIMPLE AUTUMN PATCHWORK

I have received multiple requests for some basic info on this simple autumnal throw so I thought I would add it here to the blog for those of you who were interested and waiting.

Inspired by our HARVEST bundle from a few weeks ago, I knew I wanted to work on something I could squeeze into all of the other deadlines I had. So it had to be easy. Like really easy.

BASIC TUTORIAL

Since the classic Nine Patch is one of my all time favorite blocks, I thought a simple patchwork would be perfect. So here is what I did.

  • I used (10) harvest-feeling prints in caramels, cinnamons, golds, oranges, greens and olives.
    • I cut (3) 2 ¼” strips from each.
  • I used (10) cream prints that coordinated with my harvest prints.
    • I cut (3) 2 ¼” strips from each of those, as well.
    • From each of the same (10) cream prints, I also cut (1) 5 ¾” strip and cut that into (6) 5 ¾” alternate squares. You will need (60) total alternate squares.
  • I sewed the strips into basic Nine Patch strip sets.

  • I made (60) 5 3/4″ x 5 3/4″ Nine Patch blocks total.

  • I alternated Nine Patches and alternate squares.
  • I first layed it out 9 across and 12 rows down to see if that was enough. But then decided to add one more row widthwise for a 10 x 12 layout. Here is my partial layout below.

  • I decided to add a border at the very end, just to frame it a bit. I cut (7) 3 ½” strips for the border.

My final quilt measures 59″ x 69″, which was perfect for an “adult kid lap throw” :-)!

With my bundle leftovers and a bit of extra stash I am making another one exactly the same and a third quilt that I will show you guys soon too. I guess I had a flurry of activity with this fabric combo and there are, after all, three kids!

AFTER QUILTING

Susan [@thefeltedpear] did some gorgeous all-over quilting using my favorite “biscuit” pantograph – isn’t it just lovely? This is much larger than I normally go since it is an informal couch throw and you know… I kind love it. Big time. Thank you Susan!

Happy Sewing!
