Hello Fig Friends!
Today I wanted to do a quick catch up on our latest impromptu Facebook Group Sew Along.
See more info about the Sew Along at the end of this post.
CATALINA STARS is a very popular Fig Tree charm pack-friendly pattern, and I know that many of you have made 1…2…maybe 3 or more of these lovelies over the years.
It’s definitely one of those quilts you could do in a weekend or two, and people tend to come back to it again and again due to its ease and versatility. Honestly, I’ve seen this quilt mocked up in so many variations and can’t find a single one that I don’t love!
……
With the arrival of the ROSIE fabric collection, I thought it would be a perfect substitution for any of you who missed out on the original CATALINA fabric collection we used way back when the pattern was first created.
MOCK UP WITH IVORY EYELET
This is our mock up here below for those of you who want a star by star visual of where to put your ROSIE charm packs and extra yardage. For this one, you would use your kit and add in a bit of any ivory solid or IVORY EYELET that you have on hand for the block backgrounds [actually any soft small low volume ivory print would be great here for this look].
Its going a tiny bit “off script” from the pattern to make a sample that is a bit softer perhaps with the ivory eyelet as block backgrounds. This gives your eye a tiny bit more breathing room if you will.
Instead of saving the extra yardage fabrics for block backgrounds, we used (2) 2 ½” strips of each for the borders and just (1) 4 ½” strip for the [d] pieces in the quilt.

MOCK UP USING ONLY CREAMS/FLORALS IN KIT
And here is your second option mock up…

If you are working only from the kit we offered a few weeks ago, this above would be your layout visual. This is a bit more scrappy and a more blended in look where the block backgrounds dont set the blocks off, but blend them in instead.
I changed up the pattern info a bit to get you this look, here below is what you would want to do if you didn’t want to use any ivory eyelet/solid add ins:
BIG CREAM FLORAL FABRIC: [you are not using any for star block backgrounds]
TAN RETRO BOWS FABRIC: [you are not using any for star block backgrounds]
IVORY w/ MULTI FIREWORK FABRIC: [you are using this as noted in pattern]
IVORY w/ TAN FIREWORKS FABRIC: [you are using for (6) star block backgrounds]
IVORY w/ RED FIREWORKS FABRIC: [you are using this as noted in pattern]
This cutting above will give you the (20) [d] needed, one each of (4) side borders and the T/B borders.
Of course if you are adding some of your own yardages, you can follow our layout suggestions or just use your own.
……
I’ve had a few customers ask about the possibility of making the quilt larger…and I am happy to report that this is a super easy pattern to do this with. Simply make a few more PATCHWORK ALTERNATE BLOCKS and a few more SAWTOOTH STARS.
Currently the quilt is made up in a 5 x 6 grid [30 blocks total]. If you wanted it just slightly larger, you could do a 6 x 7 grid [42 blocks], or go even bigger! The best way to decide how the stars and patchwork blocks look is to simply lay them out. You can use a design wall or, my preference, the floor!

The CATALINA STARS PATTERN is available in the FIG TREE SHOP in both PAPER and Downloadable PDF.
……
And in case you are new around here, here is the original version created with the CATALINA fabric collection!

Isn’t it perfection?! A summertime throw ready to enjoy in plenty of time for the upcoming season.
……
If you are part of our FIG TREE QUILTS FRIENDS FACEBOOK GROUP, you probably already know about this but we are having a quick impromptu upcoming sew along for CATALINA STARS. It really is such a fun and simple quilt to work on… I think you will quickly see how it is an addicting one to come back to again and again!
Below is our schedule:

We had kits in the shop, but they have since SOLD OUT. However, this is a perfect scrap buster and I encourage you to take a peek in your stash. This quilt lends itself well to leftover layer cake squares, long-forgotten charm packs, kit leftovers, etc.
The world is your oyster!

Happy Sewing!
