MODA BLOCKHEADS 5: GROUP 2 – WEEK 17

OUR BLOCK #17: CHRISTMAS WREATH (12″ Finished)

When I first saw Vanessa’s block, I immediately saw a Christmas wreath and couldn’t get it out of my head. I knew I could use up lots of small scraps of greens to add some dimension, and a bright pop of red for the bow. What do you guys think?! I kind of want to see a whole quilt of this little guy…

Although I am certainly continuing to create blocks for my BLOCKHEADS 5 LAYOUT, I also felt making this in a 12″ size might give me an opportunity to create another side project…perhaps another pillow accent. You can never have too many festive pillows, right?!

PIECING INSTRUCTIONS:

If you’ve been following along in my BLOCKHEADS 5 journey, you are already aware that I piece my quarter square triangles (QSTs) differently than the MODA Pattern Sheet in order to avoid bias along the edges. To learn more, check out THIS BLOG POST, and the cutting instructions below…

For a 6″ block, eliminate cutting for [C], [D], [E], and [F]. Instead, cut*:

• (1) 3 1/4″ square [C]
• (1) 3 1/4″ square [D]
• (1) 3 1/4″ square [E]
• (1) 3 1/4″ square [F]

For a 12″ block, eliminate cutting for [C], [D], [E], and [F]. Instead, cut*:

• (1) 5 1/4″ square [C]
• (1) 5 1/4″ square [D]
• (1) 5 1/4″ square [E]
• (1) 5 1/4″ square [F]

*And if you want trimming up space, then even a tiny bit more than that would be recommended.

Cut [C], [D], [E], and [F] squares on both diagonals to yield (4) triangle pieces each. Arrange your prints as desired, then sew and trim your QST units. This will take the place of steps 2 & 3 in the MODA Pattern Sheet. Follow all other piecing instructions as directed.
