Similar to our very first MBH5 block from our WEEK 1 BLOG POST, we simplified this week’s block and created it a bit more in the style in which I sew. I have changed *almost* all of the cutting instructions into “ribbon” flying geese units using the SEW & FLIP method instead of half square triangles.
I know some you have a love/hate relationship with half square triangles (HSTs) and others of you have a love/hate relationship with flying geese. I am definitely in the first camp, and I actually LOVE making flying geese instead of HSTs so I just could not resist. Please follow whatever method works for you but this is definitely more up my alley in terms of construction.
So, as you can see below, it is a lot of flying geese [or “ribbon” flying geese type units] for us for this block (12) and only (4) HSTs! We also changed our block center to be (1) larger block – perfect for fussy cutting if you like! – instead of (4) smaller squares.
If you are with me on your love of flying geese, then this version might just be for you. Follow the cutting and layout instructions below for your own 12″ version:
*For your HST units, trim to 2 1/2″ square before piecing to your corner Ivory Solid squares. You should have (2) red/ivory HSTs and (2) green/ivory HSTs.
Using your 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ Star Unit rectangles, and your 2 1/2″ squares in ivory, low volume/tan dot, red, and green, create your “ribbon” flying geese units:

If you are a beginning quilter and these instructions/alterations make no sense to you, you should most definitely stick to the original pattern, as this is just a suggestion for an alternate way of construction. It is intended for those familiar with the SEW & FLIP METHOD of sewing units and for those that love flying geese units as much as I do!
You can, of course, still do the traditional method of piecing half square triangles and just follow our color idea and print combinations as you go!
