Welcome to Week #54 of the MODA BLOCKHEADS 3 SEW ALONG. Oh my goodness… we are SO CLOSE. This week it the lovely Janet’s turn once again and she is bringing us her Windmill block this time around. And even though we loved here block, we needed more little ones so we decided to make parts of her block instead!
THIS MONTH’S BLOCK #54: WINDMILLS
So since we needed more 6″ blocks, we decided that Janet’s 12″ block taken apart into sections was the perfect solution. So we made two! We chose two tones of red… make sure that one is significantly lighter than the other so it stands out against it, a small cream print and ivory solid on the outer corners.
Here is the PDF DOWNLOAD, CLICK HERE on Janet’s blog to get the block and read her inspirations. Go grab yours!
We have gotten dozens of emails in the last week asking us about our final layout. We have posted it before, but here it is again BELOW. We have just made a few alterations to one of the ones offered by MODA a while back, added a few of our own alternate blocks as well as some cream patchwork blocks.
We will also be adding a simple scrappy cream patchwork as an outer border all the way around. More on that in a few weeks when we reveal our final block!
Here is our LAYOUT, click HERE for PDF.

I love these two blocks also and am getting started on them today! Thank you!
Quick question: With adding the extra scrappy cream patchwork border around, do you know if the 5 yd pieces of backing fabric that you have in your shop will be enough for this quilt? Thanks!
joanna@figtreequilts.com | 20th Jan 21
Great question! yes the final layout will be 68″ x 76″ and the 5 yd cuts for backing will be more than enough. Just piece vertically instead of horizontally.

I have really enjoyed and loved seeing your cheerful blocks each week during Blockheads 3! I love how you took a simple color scheme, and made it so beautiful! I’m going to try to copy your ideas, and I’ve learned a lot from you and all the other designers too. Thanks for your blocks, and I love your blog too!

I am so very glad to hear that. It has been a fun and involved journey and we are very happy with how it all came together!
