A fresh, summer feeling collection with beautiful reds, soft greys, buttery yellows, spring greens, all on an ivory background with a wonderful pop of navy blue! Due out in stores next month! We are so excited for this one we can hardly stand it!

A FEW INTRODUCTIONS

Lollipopssmall2
… one of my favorite brand new patterns, LOLLIPOPS, made up in the AVALON collection with 1 Jelly Roll and some background and border fabric. There are no sewing templates in this pattern. I promise! Its a fantastic method that we have loved for years!

ABOUT THE QUILT ALONG

For those of you who are regulars over here but aren't quite sure what this QUILT ALONG is all about, here are some pointers:

• Each day [starting last Monday and going through March 1st], 3 different MODA designers are blogging about the Quilt Along and are sharing their own block with you. You can see the list of designers blogging each day at the end of this post. Each block can be easily downloaded on each designer's blog as a pdf.

• Each designer is also having a MODA fabric giveaway [courtesy of the wonderfully generous MODA mothership] of one of their collections so if you enter at each blog, you will have a great chance of WINNING something. Free blocks and free fabric, is there anything more perfect?!

• All of the blocks finish at 9" and would all work wonderfully in a sampler quilt. The instructiuons are all simple strip pieced and they all the blocks can be made from Fat 1/8's or large scraps so its perfect for your scrap bucket too.The directions for the blocks are all from Fat 1/8's.

HAVING A LITTLE FUN

Now I have to tell you that I just couldn't get into the Farmer's Wife quilt along [the one that swept the web last year] for a couple of reasons… the blocks were so small and they were all templates. Two things which I really don't love. So personally I enjoyed that one from far away. They were beautiful but I was happy to watch it go by.

This one… however.. is 9" blocks, which are just much more my speed, and no templates. That's right, not a template in site.

When I tell you that you can easily do all 3 of each day's block in that afternoon, I really mean it. Because I have kind of been doing it. Not all of them, but most of them….

This is our block… which I cut and pieced in under an hour, both of them.

Myblocks

It's Block #15 in the Quilt Along. I'm a bit addicted to it and plan on making it in several other color combinations and sprinkling it about my sampler or even making it every other block…. I guess we'll have to see how it goes. The flying geese are quite fun to make when you know yoiu only have to make eight! And it looks good in so many different fabric combos!

Now to visit some of our friends who have shared since Monday, since this is a Friendship Quilt Along after all…

A FEW TIPS FROM OUR SEWING:

TIP
#1: Many of these blocks use the method of sewing a square onto a
rectangle, on the diagonal and then trimiming out the excess fabrics
underneath. Whenever I use that method [which I love and use often], I
trim out only the extra side of the piece on top and not whatever fabric
was used for the bottom rectangle. This is because if you leave the
bottom piece intact, it acts a foundation of sorts for your block. You
cut that piece and it should be exactly the size you want it to be
whereas the piece on top has been sewn and is often slightly irregular,
coming out a bit shy of the shape or a bit large. The piece on the
bottom will always be accurate and will help you with easier piecing as
you build your block. The bulk of the extra piece has never been a
problem for me or my quilter. The only time you can't use this method is
when the piece that is being added on top is white/light and the piece
underneath is dark. You must them trim out both pieces.i Try it and see
some great results.

Tip
#2: On Anne's block we didn't want to fuss with the thin bias tape so
we used a 3/8" bias tape maker, made a small piece of bias from the end
of the fabric strip, ran it through the maker and affixed it to our
triangle with little dots of Roxanne's Glue Baste It. It was quick and
easy.

We plan on making many more blocks as more of our friends share them so check back over here throughout the QUILT ALONG to see how they are turning out! We might even make more tomorrow!

Sailawaymain… our SAIL AWAY pattern. All of those boats are made from one Layer Cake. Can you believe it? We love, love this quilt.

GIVEAWAY

As we mentioned above, we are of course having an AVALON GIVEWAY. So leave us a comment about which color or specific print of Avalon you are looking forward to most. To see the entire collection, click on the AVALON button on the right sidebar so you can see all of the fabrics [we've fixed all the collection links so you can click on any of them if you like].

Sailawaymedium2… a styled shot of our SAIL AWAY pattern. Can't you just channel the beach when you look at those boats?

Two lucky winners will be chosen, one for a DESIGNER ROLL and one for a LAYER CAKE. We will also add a third winner for a grouping of all our AVALON patterns and a charm pack!. Be sure to comment to be entered.

My favorite has to be the candy apple red small floral. Guess what my favorite color is! They are all beautiful!

  2. dee | 21st Feb 13

I adore Fig Tree and Avalon line – the sail boats are ADORABLE. I don’t think I can pick just one of this line as a favorite, althought, I am a red girl – but the blues are such a stunning accent. Just finished a quilt using your Breakfast at Tiffany – Love it too. Thank you for the opportunity to enjoy this line.

  3. Sandy M | 21st Feb 13

Your blocks look fantastic. I think i should start sewing a few of these myself.
My favorite colorway from the new Avalon line is the Mimosa. robin’s Egg is right there with it, but Mimosa is my fav.

  4. Lynn b | 21st Feb 13

I am really like the combo of flowers and dots and stripes. I think my fav is probably the small print flower/rose in pistachio or mimosa. I also love the cherries on robin egg. So sweet. Thanks for designing such beautiful color ways!

  5. Izzy | 21st Feb 13

I love the red in all of the prints! Red is by far my favourite colour, but in this collection, the red is absolutely fabulous! I even signed up for the Fat Quarter Shop’s 2013 Designer Mystery BOM just because the fabric this year is Avalon. 🙂

  6. Debbie | 21st Feb 13

I love the robin’s egg blue. I love the sail boat quilt.

  7. Wendy | 21st Feb 13

I love all your fabrics, but I am really falling in love with Avalon. I am most excited about the dark blues in this collection (I think you are calling it Nantucket)…and my favorite print is the one with the little white flowers on the blue background (#20207). Thanks for the generous give away!!!

  8. Erin Baker | 21st Feb 13

I’ve been following the Moda quilt along, and can’t wait to *hopefully* work on some of the squares this weekend! I LOVE the navy blue + white polka dot in the Avalon fabric line! For some reason I find it difficult to find a lot of navy, which I love! Thanks for the chance to win!

  9. Mah Quilter | 21st Feb 13

    Hi Joanna,
I love all of them but there are two I am looking forward to working with. Both are Wicker Gray. Numbers 20215 13 and 20203 13. Wishing all who read this a great day.

  10. Lynn b | 21st Feb 13

By the way I can’t wait for Avalon to come out!

  11. Anita K | 21st Feb 13

Oh Boy how to choose, I’m crazy about them all, however I really really love the Wicker Grey with the cherries. A great giveaway, Good Luck to everyone!!!

  12. Trina | 21st Feb 13

Love the color combinations in the new Avalon! I think my favorite is the small flower prints (20207), especially in the Robins Egg blue. The print reminds me of the scrappy fabrics my grandmother used.

  13. Tina in Nevada | 21st Feb 13

I can’t wait to see all of the Navy in Avalon. It’s such a wonderful surprise of color! Love your fabrics!!

  14. Bertie | 21st Feb 13

Thank you for the block, they are all fabulous. I love to enter for the reds or creams, thank you.

  15. Sandra Timmons | 21st Feb 13

Your sailboat pattern is a cutey and would make any child happy to have it in their possession. Being a lover of Valentine’s Day and a birthday this month, I love red fabric or solid as well as blue. Your giveways are just awesome and will make one of us quilters so very happy to win. Thank you for the chance to win and hope 2013 brings you lots of wonderful things to come.

Pistachio for sure, I can’t get enough of any color of green!

I love the Robin’s egg colors. Your fabric line is very refreshing!

  21. LeslieBee | 21st Feb 13

Love…. all of them. I think number 20205 is my favorite pattern. It looks so fresh and a little like trellised flowers. I’m having a hard time deciding between the Red and the Pistachio….

  22. Elaine Satterfield | 21st Feb 13

I am loving all the Pistachio prints in your Avalon line! This quilt-along is great and I love all the blocks you have made! Thank you for the smart tips!

I like 20203 17 in Robins Egg the best! Thanks for the chance!

  24. Darlene | 21st Feb 13

I agree with you. Those small blocks are cute but I don’t have the patience for them. Might be a hand piecing job while tv watching. I like your blocks.

  25. Becky Greene | 21st Feb 13

I love all of the navy prints, but the Wicker Gray is just fabulous also!! Thanks for sharing the great block and the tips. Thanks, too, for the chance to win some wonderful fabric!!!!

  28. Barbara | 21st Feb 13

The whole collection is wonderful! If I have to pick, I’d go with the reds, #20205 in particular.I think all the blocks from this hop would look great in the red collection.

I like the Candy Apple reds and the Pistachios….they would be great together!!!!!
    Sweet block!!!

  31. Rebecca S. | 21st Feb 13

Love, love, love the Nantucket Blue! I’m especially fond of the small floral (and the polka dots). Close tie for second with the Candy Apple Red and the Mimosa (you make the perfect yellows!) Now if I could only find more of the Ocean blue from California Girl I think that would look great with the Nantucket Blue.

  32. Martha | 21st Feb 13

Love the blues — all of them! Can’t wait for this line to come out.

  33. Mary | 21st Feb 13

  40. Sandy D | 21st Feb 13

Thanks for tutorial I am going to give that a try not cutting both layers of fabric. My favorite in the Avalon LIne is the Candy Apple Red specifically 20202 14 but I do like them all. Thanks.

  41. Kathy | 21st Feb 13

I love the blues the best, but the Nantuckets are my favorites – any of the prints will do! I love the background color on your Carnival Lollipops. To me the quilt is a bird’s eye view of beach umbrellas on a sandy beach, which will be perfect for the home that we plan to purchase in Florida. You are so talented and so generous to us groupees! I wish you and yours a blessed and fruitful year!

  42. Paula | 21st Feb 13

  56. Susan | 21st Feb 13

I just can’t wait to see the newest pop of blue….of course I can see the entire collection made up in some wonderful things, but that blue may just be the nautical touch that sends me over the edge….susan

  57. abby | 21st Feb 13

I love your new Avalon line – and got my hands on a jelly roll and charm pack off etsy. I’ve been making the Round and Round pattern by Camille out of Avalon and it is so cute! I love all of the navy prints!

  80. Laura K | 21st Feb 13

I love the navy blue! It gives the collection such a pop of vibrant color. My next favorite would have to be the reds though. Which is funny because I don’t normally love red much but it has been growing on me recently. Thank you for the beautiful block and the chance to win.

I am really looking forward to working with Avalon. I really like Pistachio and Candy Apple but all the colors look so nice together.

  82. Terry Fassburg | 21st Feb 13

I can’t wait for Navy in Avalon.

    Debbie

  87. NQuinn | 21st Feb 13

I am looking forward to the 20207-15 Nantucket print specifically and everything in the Robin’s Egg and Candy Apple colors. I love all the Fig Tree fabric collections since they coordinate so well together. I think Avalon will go well with some of my leftover Strawberry Fields scraps.

  88. Jenny W | 21st Feb 13

Thanks for the great block and chance to win! I’m most looking forward to the Blue print with the white flowers with yellow centers. Very sweet!

  89. Nancy | 21st Feb 13

I’ll have to go with the blues, both the navy and the robin’s egg. Just lovely.

  90. Diana | 21st Feb 13

I love the navy blue in this collection. It makes me feel like summer. But that was also my husbands reaction on the quilt i made entirely of Fig Tree fabrics. I used mainly strawberry fields and some californian girl and some butterscotch and rose. I noticed a lot of fabrics contained a nice dot!
Looking at the prints I would certainly buy 20206, stripes and tartans are needed in a quilt!

  91. Tami | 21st Feb 13

Well, do I really have to pick just one fabric or color I am looking forward to? I LOVE all of your fabrics, always have and no doubt, always will. But I do love the navy fabrics in Avalon.

  92. Heather Braun | 21st Feb 13

I love the 20202 12 Mimosa, I’m really into yellows right now! Thanks for the chance to win this gorgeous collection!
    mrs(dot)hbraun(at)gmail(dot)com

  94. Debbie | 21st Feb 13

I love the Nantucket and Candy Apple Red roses. Both are just too gorgeous to choose between them! Thanks for the pattern and chance to win!

  95. Judy W | 21st Feb 13

Beautiful fabric and beautiful patterns. Love your new line. Delicate with a touch of bold colors in the bright blue. I love Pistachio. What a pretty color. Thanks for the chance.

  105. Domestic Bliss | 21st Feb 13

The Avalon line is so beautiful, it’s difficult to choose just one color, but the Daisy color is especially beautiful and soft, particularly the 20200 with the larger flowers.
Thank you for the sewing tips… and I’m so impressed with the squares that you’ve been making!! They look wonderful!

  106. Karen C. | 21st Feb 13

The colors and prints work together so well that it’s very tough to choose favorites. Colorwise, I like the navy large rose print, but I couldn’t be without the little cherry print in cream or gray! I think this line is very unique in that it has an Americana or nautical feel, yet maintains the softness that is Fig Tree at the same time…I really love that! We are going to see some beautiful quilts made with Avalon.

  107. Karyn | 21st Feb 13

The Beautiful Blue Polka Dots! I thought of a little girls triple ruffle pants right away! And I think I would have to make the top with the lighter blue fabric! I’m happy to be working with an Avalon jelly roll already, so I have enjoyed all the prints so far. My favorite is probably the 20205 pattern in all colors, or the 20202-15 pattern in the navy blue. Thanks for the giveaway Fig Tree!

  239. janet | 21st Feb 13

I like the robin’s egg blue prints. They looks so much like spring. (I just can’t wait for it to be spring!)

  242. zuska | 21st Feb 13

It is so beautiful collection, I love all prints and my the most favorite colors are Red and Yellow. Lovely.

  243. Linda P | 21st Feb 13

I am always drawn to red so I would say the Candy Apple, however after seeing that Robin’s Egg blue – it’s a close call!! My hubster’s daughter recently moved out of our Florida house, and we are fixing it up, so the little sail boat pattern would be so darling. We are on the east coast and with the Indian River located there, we often see the sail boats. Your block is super – I love making flying geese blocks, and I agree with you making those connector corners and cutting the “flippy” off.
    Thank you, JoAnna!

  244. Lana | 21st Feb 13

I love Candy Apple Red! It was hard to choose, I love Avalon Collection! Thank you for the chance to win!

  245. Linda K | 21st Feb 13

Well, I was going to say Red because I LOVE all things red, but I’m picking the Wicker Grey. I don’t have much grey in my stash but I think it will make a beautiful quilt with some Fig Tree yardage I have been saving. Thanks for the chance to sew with some of your new, yummy fabrics.

  246. Kathy | 21st Feb 13

I so want to see the blue Nantucket. It is beautiful. Can’t wait to see it in person. Oh, I do love the candy apple red too…

I love polka dots hands down, but I have to say I’m a little obsessed with your prints 20205 and 20206 in all the color-ways. Thank you for the chance to win!

  273. Carol Sc | 21st Feb 13

With winter in full swing here, your fabrics remind me that Spring will come — maybe not as quickly as I would like. I am particularly fond of the Robin Egg stripe, but like all the fabrics and I’m enjoying this blog hop.

My favourite fabric is the large floral in candy apple red, closely followed by the same pattern in grey.

  285. Sew Cindy | 21st Feb 13

I truly enjoyed reading your post today, Joanna. Right now I’m into a “splash” of red and a “splash” of red there so I’d have to go with the red. BUT – tomorrow is another day so….

I haven’t been able to do any sewing in a while due to a foot injury. But now I’m in PT and even though I have a few things I should finish up first, I’m really liking the look of this quilt! And maybe I’ll win some yummy fabrics to celebrate a functioning foot 🙂

  310. Britt G. | 21st Feb 13

I asked my preschool daughter to pick her favorite fabric from the new line: she chose 20207 12 Mimosa. She really loved all the prints with the little white flowers in a color, but the mimosa color was her favorite. I always love seeing your new lines in the shops and can’t wait Avalon to come out as well. Your colors and prints are always so pretty for quilts and little girl clothes. Thanks for the giveaway chance.

  322. Briawna | 21st Feb 13

It’s way too hard to pick one color from this beautiful line. Because I’m having a baby boy in May, I’m loving all the greens and blues I see in lots of Moda lines. So, just for that reason, I’m going to say that the pistachio and nantucket are at the top of the list…but I also love, love, love the candy apple red!

  323. Sandy R | 21st Feb 13

Since I’m a red girl, I love the Candy Apple Red, particularly the flower print 20202. The Nantucket, however, is a close second. Can’t wait until this fabric collection comes out! I’m even considering doing the Fat Quarter Shop Mystery Designer quilt this year, just because I love the Avalon fabric collection.

  380. Becke | 21st Feb 13

    Hello Joanna:
I am looking forward to the dark blue prints. I like it that they are in a range from small to large prints. The dark blue reminds me of some of the vintage feedsack prints my grandmother used to have.
I love all your prints because they have a nostalgic feeling and a respect for the past, but with a fresh look to them. My grandmother would have loved your colors!! She was a lover of pastels, just like me.
    Thanks so much. Becke

Well, picking a favorite is kind of like picking your favorite child…I guess I can kind of whisper to each one that “you’re my favorite, but don’t tell your brother/sister, we don’t want to hurt their feelings”. So please whisper that to the #20202 12 Mimosa and the 20200 13 Wicker Gray. But please don’t let the other fabrics hear you!

  398. Lynn | 21st Feb 13

So Hard because they are all so yummy. But Pistachio caught my eye first. Thanks for the giveaway. 🙂

  413. Marie C | 21st Feb 13

You of course are one of my favorite designers of fabric and patterns. The Avalon line is fun with its darker contrast colors, but I’m always so partial to your greens, so if I have to pick something, Pistachio 20202~11 is the one. Of course backgrounds are a biggie to choose so Daisy is adorable: 20203 ~ 16. Love how you’ve laid out all your blocks. Bravo for keeping up! Better than me. Your blog is one of the easiest to download and find things. Thanks for that!

  414. Anna D | 21st Feb 13

It is hard to choose, they are all great, but to mention one I’d say Robins Egg blue no 20203-17 … and I also love the Candy Apple Red no 20207-14 but I want to buy all the grey fabrics, they blend so well with most of your fabric lines and I have lots of leftovers from FigTreeClub projects.

There is something so calming about the pistachio and the print in 20205 is stunning. I can see my grandchildren cuddled up under a quilt using all of these beauties after a day on the beach at our home in Ocean City NJ – just a stones throw from our own Avalon!

This Spring collection is just the best to shake off the doldrums that seem to strike this time of year. My faves just have to be the reds and navys, and well, all of the collection of course. So to pick one, it will have to be the navy floral. Thanks for sharing your talent with us Joanna.

  578. Dana | 22nd Feb 13

I love the Robin’s Egg and the tone on tone blender could find it’s way into almost any quilt I make, beautiful. Thanks.

    Hello Joanna,
What a fun and creative sailboat quilt. Joanne, you are always so innovative in your designs and fabrics. You have a great eye for color. You definitely have a very recognizable color palette in Fig Tree. Thank you for inspiring all of us to “climb up that quilt mountain” and create with fabric.

  597. Robbin | 22nd Feb 13

I’m in love with Nantucket. Love the blue, and the yellow!

All of the colors in Avalon compliment each other so well it is hard to single out just one color….the navy blue makes them pop so I guess I will have to say any of the navys are a favorite but that is not to say that they aren’t all FABULOUS because they are:) The sail boats sing to me…it is from my childhood…I still have a quilt that is now thread bare that has sail boats that I won’t throw away that my mother pieced and hand quilted. She passed away 2 years ago and when I see sail boats I think of her and that wonderful quilt.

I LOVE them all but I think my favorite color is the Robin’s egg. I’m hoping to repaint my bedroom in that color.

I love the Pistachio! Especially the dot, which I can already tell I will be using to make yards and yards of binding with!

I love ALL the colorways, but if I have to choose, it would be the Robins Egg blue and the Pistachio is a very close 2nd! Thanks for sharing with us and for the chance to win !!

These are all so beautiful it’s hard to choose one. I especially love the Nantucket and the Pistachio. They look stunning together. Thank you for sharing the blocks, tips and generous giveaway!

Love the Nantucket polka dot. I could make a whole dress out of that fabric!

I love all of your fabric lines. Every single one. In Avalon, my favorites are Robin’s Egg and Candy Apple Red. Yummy!

I always love your fabrics…in Avalon, i love the light blue background with the roses…couldn’t see what the name was on that one. I also love all the light lime greens! Thanks for the giveaway. I really appreciated your hints on sewing the blocks. I have ‘liked’ you on FB — am relatively new to FB
