NEW PATTERN SHEET: CHUNKY DANDELIONS + LAYOUT INFO

Sometimes I see a pair of fabrics next to each other and they immediately spark something.. does that ever happen to you?

The moment I put this golden cheddar cross weave fabric next to my favorite green print from SUMMER’S END, I just couldn’t let it go. After a few block attempts, this CHUNKY DANDELION felt like just the perfect way to feature both the fabrics and the “feel” I was hoping for.

The simple (9) block lap throw rendition is my ode to a simple summer quilt… I sure hope you join me in making one of your own.

LAYOUT INSTRUCTIONS

There are lots of different ways you can use this block but this is how I worked up my new CHUNKY DANDELION block as a lap throw for some sweet summer decor!

Final Size: 44 ¼” x 49 ½” 

BLOCKS

• Make (9) CHUNKY DANDELION blocks using instructions in the PATTERN SHEET.

NINE PATCHES

• Make (16) nine patch blocks . You will need (8) green nine patches and (8) gold ninepatches from your gold and green leftovers from the DANDELION blocks.

• All nine patch squares are 1 ½” squares.

SASHING

• Using a good group of scrappy ivory prints cut all of your needed sashing strips as follows:

• Cut (12) 3 1/2″ x 9 3/4″ horizontal sashing strips
• Cut (12) 3 1/2″ x 11 3/4″ vertical sashing strips

ASSEMBLY

1. Make (3) BLOCK ROWS with the vertical sashing.
2. Make (4) SASHING/NINE PATCH ROWS with the horizontal sashing.
3. Alternate the two kinds of rows, starting and ending with a SASHING ROW.

BORDERS

Using an ivory print with a hint of green [I used the ivory text with green from my SUMMERS END collection]”

1. Cut (2) 2 1/2″ x 40 1/4″ T/B outer borders. Note that we are cutting and adding T/B borders first so that it fits within a single strip each.
2. Next, cut (2) 2 ½” x 49 ½” L/R outer borders. Add those to the L/R sides. Press out.

FINISHING

• Quilt as desired.
• Bind with (7) 3″ strips. Note that this is wider than normal to make a chunky oversized binding for this quilt to help feature the green print that I love so much. The easiest way to make wide binding is to sew app. ½” away from the edge and then let some more fabric float off the edge when turning as well.

• 1/2 yd. Golden Cheddar CROSS WEAVE
• 1 ¼ yd. Green Meadow Print for blocks and binding
• ½ yd. Ivory with Green Text Print
• (6) ½ yd. ivory prints for blocks and sashing
• Green binding [included above]
• Chunky Dandelion Pattern Sheet

OTHER IDEAS

As an alternative, these blocks would make a perfect table or better yet, a bed runner! Use 3 or 5 blocks straight across for a fantastic runner sized project. Surround the outside of the blocks with nine patches as shown. Here is some info for this setting idea below…

• Make (5) DANDELION BLOCKS
• Make (12) NINE PATCH BLOCKS, (6) of each color.
• Cut (6) vertical sashing and (10) horizontal sasshing.
• Outer border pictured is the same 2 1/2″ width as in the above lap throw suggested instructions. But feel free to make your border any width you like of course.
• Final size as shown: 17 ½” x 64 ¾”.
