PATTERN SHOWCASE: SUMMER SPOOLS

There are certain quilt blocks that have been around for so long that they are instantly recognizable and immediately invoke images of vintage quilts and simpler times. I feel like the Spool Block is one of those. It can be made in any variety of sizes and combinations, and this is my take on a simple, charm pack-friendly version.

This SUMMER SPOOLS quilt is the newest in our LITTLE BOX OF FIGS patterns. It goes out to all the LITTLE BOX subscribers first with the full kit. After those ship, we make the pattern available to all those of you who might like to join us and sew along! It is such a wonderful stash buster project too!!

We separated out the CHARM PACKS into a few coordinating colorways for some visual continuity. You could also go completely scrappy if you prefer but I really like the look of each spool being its own little “color story”.

The groups we created are as follows:

• Green & Coral
• Aqua & Citron
• Olive & Gold
• Brown
• Greys
• Red & Coral

If you want to follow my combinations exactly, use the cover photo for guidance and follow all the directions and tips in the pattern. Further directions on how many of each color family to cut is all in the pattern as well!

  • Feel free to use other favorite charm packs or your stash in a rainbow of colors.
• 5/8 yd. tan [LATTE EYELET]
• 5/8 yd. Bella Ivory Solid -or- Ivory EYELET

SASHING: 3/4 yd. small cream print [Portofino used in our sample]
POSTS: 1/4 yd. pink [CANTALOUPE EYELET]
OUTER BORDER: 1/2 yd. coral [CORAL EYELET]
BACKING: 3 yd. floral print [Portofino]
