PATTERN SHOWCASE: TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS CROSS STITCH SAMPLER

……

QUILT INSPO FROM BEGINNING TO END

Honestly I am a quilter at heart and always will be. I have never really cross stitched and usually have just admired it from afar. But lately I have been a bit bitten by the cross stitch bug. At least a tiny bit. There is something enticing about working on something small and so methodical. I am learning both the design side and the stitch side at the same time and although it will never be my main love, I want to keep my hands in it and explore it as a craft. I hope you join me!

All of our brand new CROSS STITCH patterns are directly inspired by our quilt patterns… as you can imagine, that makes the most sense to my quilty design brain!

As a quilter.. I think this is one more way to add a little quilt love into your life… this time in cross stitch form! Its really like creating a little miniature of your quilty masterpieces. And funny story about this particular pattern is that the TWAS SAMPLER QUILT was originally inspired by vintage cross stitch samplers… which is why some of the images feel like they came straight out of cross stitch… because they did. So it is definitely a full circle moment to then turn the quilt back into a cross stitch sampler. I love this so much!

In case you wanted to see the original inspiration for the TWAS CROSS STITCH, here it is…

The original TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS SAMPLER was an exclusive block-of-the-month (BOM) through our shop using our fabric line CHRISTMAS STITCHED. This BOM was such a popular pattern request that with our latest seasonal fabric collection BUON NATALE [in stores now], I recolored the pattern and it is now available in stand-alone form for everyone to enjoy!

Quilt pattern available via PAPER.
Finished Size – 71 1/2″ x 80 1/2″

TWAS SAMPLER CROSS STITCH INFO

Created in collaboration with Susan from The Felted Pear [whose cross stitching work is much better than mine] these brand new CROSS STITCH patterns are such a fun way to bring a bit of cross stitch into your life without needing a huge amount of practice or skill. Or so I tell myself :-).

I promise you this is true… since I am a brand new cross stitcher! So it’s definitely one of those “if I can do it, you can do it” kinds of things. It might take you a lot longer than an expert stitcher but you can absolutely do a little section at a time and enjoy the journey!

I found that it was the perfect way to unwind after a full day of work in a totally different way than working on a quilt… this is definitely a project that can be done on the couch with the tv on in the background.

Pattern available via PAPER or PDF.

SIMPLE FRAMING STEPS

Frame used: 8″ x 10″ AELS Vintage Picture Frame in Off White w/ Gold Trim. I found this frame on Amazon and mounted it without anything fancy. I tried out several different frames as well in color, style, and size and didn’t love any of them other than this one.

  • Sampler is framed on mat board .
  • The outer frame is a simple 1 ½” fabric strip border stitched onto the Aida itself. I used Buon Natale [#35406-24] for MODA fabrics.
  • Measuring from the borders of the sampler, I measured 3 counts over on the L/R and 4 counts on the T/B. I then marked it with heat or water erasable marker and sewed on that line like a normal quilt border to all (4) sides. I know this is not the way it is normally done but it really worked with my quilty brain :-).
  • Last, press the fabric border out and turn it along with the sampler when framing on the mat board.
