This week’s designer is Sherri McConnell of A Quilting Life and her block is called SUMMER STAR! Be sure to check out her BLOG, where I’m certain she will have all the details and tips on her lovely block.
We are back this week with another 6″ finished block…so think smaller-scale prints!
I’m sure you all know by now, but since we are using a limited color palette, we decided to choose 2 reds and 2 greens to oppose each other in the star center. We attempted to pull two fabrics that are very similar, also – to add enough visual interest, but also not make the block feel unbalanced. For the corner half square triangles (HSTs), we played with an ivory solid and a low volume cream print.
The block center, per the MODA pattern, is composed of 2 SEW & FLIP flying geese units. We decided to eliminate a few seams and create the center using the quarter square triangle (QST) method* I first discussed in WEEK TWO.
*One thing to think about with this method [IN THIS INSTANCE], is that it “wastes” fabric, and I wouldn’t be inclined to do this with a 12″ block size and (4) varied fabrics. We are continuing to keep our extra pieces in our bucket of fabrics specific to the MODA BLOCKHEADS 5 project, and we will keep pulling from these extra cuts as we go along.
For the 6″ block, you will need a center block that measures 3″ finished. Cut:
This eliminates cuts [H], [I], [J], and [K]. Cut squares twice on the diagonal to yield 4 triangles from each fabric. You can set aside the (3) extras of each. Piece (1) QST, and trim the square to 3 1/2″ unfinished.
Finish up with step 4 in the pattern!
Since this week features Sherri’s block, we surely wanted to add in some of her fabrics we pulled for our Christmas-themed quilt!
