LACEY’S HANDMADE GIFT TAGS FT. JELLY & JAM FABRIC PANEL

Hello, Lacey [@laceypoirier] here! I am so happy to be back on Joanna’s blog to do a guest tutorial on some quilty handmade gift tags using the JELLY & JAM ‘multi homemade labels panel’ shown below.

Panel is approx. 35″ x 42″ and includes various labels for both mason jar tops (regular and wide mouth) and quilts! The mason jar labels are quoted “Fresh from the Garden”, and the quilt labels have (2) varieties, including: “Handmade with Love ________” and “Handmade by:________/date:________”.

The panel includes step-by-step directions on how to use these labels, but I wanted to see what else I could come up with…

You probably don’t know this, but I absolutely LOVE to wrap gifts and adorn them with all kinds of fun extras. Seriously, any excuse to buy pretty wrapping paper, ribbon, bows…I’m all for it. So it only made sense to take the quilt label portion of the panel and create GIFT TAGS – perfect for any handmade gift – quilty or not!

SUPPLIES

• (1) JELLY & JAM Multi Labels Panel
• Fusible Fleece
• Backing Fabric
• Pinking Shears
• 3/16″ Metal Grommet Kit
• Twine/Ribbon
• OPTIONAL: Accent Wool, Buttons, DMC Thread

TUTORIAL

• From your panel, cut out your desired rectangular quilt labels, leaving a small border of background fabric (white) around the outside. HINT: As there are (7) labels all in a vertical row, you can also simply cut around the entire row to remain as one larger piece, and sub-cut after quilting.
• Iron a piece of fusible fleece to the backside of each quilt label. Measure your quilt label (or larger panel section) so that when pressing, the fusible is not larger than your panel. This will help avoid getting fusible on your iron or ironing board.
• Add a backing fabric that is slightly larger than your quilt label/panel, creating a quilt sandwich. OPTIONAL: quilt as desired. I opted for a small crosshatch, but leaving the tag unquilted allows for your signature or other lettering to be the greater focus.
• Whether quilted or unquilted, add a line of stitching 1/4″ in from the label edge around the entire perimeter of each label. This holds the layers together and creates a “finished” edge to follow with your pinking shears.
• Use your pinking shears to cut around each label, being careful not to cut through your edge seam.
• At this point, you can add your OPTIONAL accents. I went ahead and cut small daisy flowers from wool, added a small button to the center, and used some DMC thread to create a dimensional flower at the top corner of each label. Again, totally optional – but oh so cute!
• Using your grommet set, add a grommet to the opposite [top] corner of your tags. I purchased a very inexpensive “grommet kit” from Amazon. I will say that the addition of the quilting and the fusible fleece requires a sharp hole punch tool, so if you don’t already own a grommet set, be sure to read a few reviews before making your choice!
• Thread twine or ribbon through the grommet and VOILA – you’ve got the cutest gift tags! For personalization, I recommend using a PIGMA micron pen [archival-quality ink].
