AMERICAN PATCHWORK & QUILTING (APQ): DECEMBER 2024 ISSUE – THE OHIO STAR

The December 2024 issue of American Patchwork & Quilting (APQ) is LIVE on newsstands, again exploring our conversation on modern vs. traditional quilting! This is our sixth and FINAL article this year, can you believe it has been a year already?

We started with the green LOG CABIN block, continued with the WEATHERVANE block, then the CHURN DASH block, then FLYING GEESE, then the SAWTOOTH STAR and now our final issue with the OHIO STAR block. I think we covered many of the most classic “basic” blocks that we all love.

For this issue, I spoke with Denyse Schmidt for an exciting close to this series. Denyse is widely known for her innovative reinterpretations of quilt classics. I thought she would be a wonderful designer to wrap up the conversation. Together, we decided on the OHIO STAR, one of the most recognizable traditional blocks.

MY QUILT: OHIO STAR TWINKLE

Finished Quilt: 61 1/2″ x 61 1/2″

I wanted to design a classic Ohio Star quilt in a fresh holiday-inspired setting. I love the way these simple blocks play together and create so much movement. And of course, you know how much I love a good secondary pattern so this was both simple and interesting all at the same time I think. Working with a variety of red and cream fabrics gives the quilt the sparkle I love so much!

DENYSE’S QUILT

Denyse’s quilt is such a wonderful example of what happens to a traditional quilt block when it is reimagined in a new and different way. I love this huge Ohio Star so much and it is a perfect example of the modern feel that can be imbued into a classic block with nothing more than color and size. It is fantastic Denyse!

Be sure to check out Denyse on Instagram HERE and I do believe she has kits for her version as well while supplies last.

THANK YOU

I have enjoyed these ladies and our conversations so much throughout this year and I am so grateful for AMERICAN PATCHWORK & QUILTING for featuring this conversation and us during this past year. A huge thank you to all of the ladies who joined me… Alexia, Alison, Jen, Emily, Betsy and Denyse. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I believe that through the process we have all discovered, or at least re-remembered, that we have so much more in common than not in our wonderful quilting world and that so much ties us together. I will be inspired by our quilts and these women for a long time.

Thank you and Happy Sewing!

-Joanna
