MODA BLOCKHEADS 5: GROUP 2 – WEEK 29

Welcome back! This week’s designer is Alison Dale and her block is called MARIA’S STAR. Be sure to check her out on INSTAGRAM, where I’m certain she will have photos of her lovely Foundation Paper Pieced (FPP) block contribution. You all amaze me with your paper piecing!

If you’ve been following along with me, you will know that we skipped last week (week 28).

Deadlines and life just get in the way sometimes… sorry!

Last week’s designer was Chelsi Stratton and her block was called MORNING GLORY. You can learn more about Chelsi on her BLOG and on INSTAGRAM! We might have skipped it last week, but we are going to make up for it this week and use it in a special variation as the corner posts of our setting.

OUR BLOCK #29: MORNING GLORY (Special 9″ Finished Size)

As we are winding down our BLOCKHEADS 5 journey, it’s time we create our 9″ block to accompany our quilt setting (for more info on our layout, visit THIS BLOG POST). As FPP is a bit trickier to reduce sizing, we decided to use Chelsi’s block from last week, and we are offering the 9″ cutting instructions below!

If you are following our layout, you will make (4) 9″ blocks for the four corners of your quilt.

……

CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS:

For one block, cut:

  • (4) 2 1/2″ squares [A]
  • (4) 2 1/2″ squares [B]
  • (4) 2″ squares [C]
  • (4) 2″ squares [D]
  • (8) 2″ squares [E]*
  • (4) 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles [F]*
  • (4) 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles [G]
  • (4) 1 1/4″ squares [H]
  • (1) 3 1/2″ square

*We are using the SEW & FLIP method for making our flying geese units, which differs from the piecing instructions provided in the accompanying MODA Pattern Sheet.

……

PIECING INSTRUCTIONS:

Follow the ‘Piecing Instructions’ provided in the MODA Pattern Sheet for MORNING GLORY, with the following edits and refer to the photo above to see how we put ours together:

  • Step 1: Trim your HSTs to 2″ (9″ block).
  • Step 2: Repeat to make 4 corner units measuring 3 1/2″ (9″ block).
  • Step 3: Use the SEW & FLIP method instead of the 4-at-a-time method as provided, using your [E] squares and [F] rectangles.
  • Step 4: Repeat to make 4 flying geese units measuring 3 1/2″ (9″ block).
  • Step 5: Trim center unit to 3 1/2″.
  • Step 6: Trim to 9 1/2″.
