QUICK TUTORIAL: SEW & FLIP METHOD

We have been using this method a lot lately in our SEW ALONGS and it is for sure used in most of our patterns, so I thought maybe it was time for a little refresher for those of you new to the method! It is a simple way to sew pieces together without working with triangles [and therefore bias] and templates. It is my favorite way of getting great results in my piecing.

If you are new to the SEW & FLIP piecing method, we use it in most of our patterns and are detailing the steps right here on the blog for you to reference back to, as needed.

  • Step 1: Draw or press a diagonal line on the top fabric as a sewing line. We prefer using an erasable pen like FRIXION [available in our SHOP, as well as many local quilt shops]. You can also press the line, especially on smaller pieces, this is a good alternative.
  • Step 2: Place the top fabric onto the adjoining fabric RST [right sides together], aligning the two side edges. Sew directly on the drawn or pressed line.
  • Step 3: Trim the excess fabric, leaving a 1/4″ seam allowance. If the bottom fabric is light, and the top is dark, we keep the background intact as a foundation for accurate piecing! If the top is lighter and the bottom will show through, trim both layers.
  • Step 4: Flip the top square over. Always press out toward the corner.
