What are you sewing for… NATIONAL SEW A JELLY ROLL DAY?

Hello everyone and happy Friday! We’re always excited when the weekend rolls around, but this weekend is especially fun for us Moda designers because Saturday is National Sew a Jelly Roll Day!

I think it’s pretty well documented that the jelly roll is my favorite precut, and you might say that I’ve designed “a few” (*wink wink*) patterns using this surprisingly versatile precut. (I even have an entire section of my website just for my jelly roll patterns…you can find it HERE.)

So in honor of National Sew a Jelly Roll Day, I wanted to share a couple of jelly roll patterns that I think really show how a jelly roll can make a traditionally challenging quilt pattern much simpler to put together. I’m talking about stars—Lone Stars, to be specific!

I love the timeless look of Lone Star quilts and I think every quilter should be able to tackle this design without fear, so I came up with two Lone Star quilt patterns that use straightforward cutting and piecing methods. Jelly rolls make quick work of strip piecing, and clever cutting makes it so much easier to achieve those precise points—no Y-seams or templates required.

… we made this version with an All Hallows Eve jelly roll plus 1/2 yd of the black circle dot and 1/4 yd of the orange circle dot for the rounds we wanted on the star [the kit includes 1/4 yd. orange dot and you would need to add black dot]. The borders are the same yardages as on the pattern. For this version you will need the little cream print for the inside, the black dot for the center and the large orange floral for the outer border.

October is just around the corner, so I wanted to re-imagine my Yuletide Snowflake pattern with All Hallow’s Eve fabrics. Since we have been dreaming up these FROM THE VAULT recoloring, I thought these would be a perfect addition to that series.

I love how different this big, beautiful star looks depending on your fabric placement!

… we made this version with an All Hallows Eve jelly roll plus 1/2 yd of the black circle dot/ 1/4 yd cream with orange floral and 1/4 yd of the little orange print for the rounds we wanted on the star [the kit includes 1/4 yd. orange dot and you would need to add black dot and purchase a bit more of the cream with orange floral as you are for the outer border]. The borders are the same yardages as on the pattern. For this version you will need the little little orange print for the inside, the black dot for the center and the large cream with orange floral for the outer border.

Note that for both of these stars you would use 1 jelly Roll and a little extra yardage or either orange or black in order to get all of those “rounds” to work out mathematically, some ivory border and the borders of your choice… so many good options in the All Hallows Eve collection!

My other Lone Star design, Jelly Stars, features four smaller stars, which gives you even more opportunities to play with fabric placement.

… we made this version with 1 All Hallows Eve Jelly Roll, ivory solid background as well as outer border and the large orange floral for the sashing.

And one last project to share in case you are not quite ready to tackle one of the lone star projects… Spools Quartet, All Hallow’s Eve style! A super simple pattern that is such a fun finish!

SALE SALE SALE!

It wouldn’t be National Sew A Jelly Roll Day without a little sale. Once you use up all the ones you have sewing… you will need some new ones to replenish that stack of jelly rolls, am I right?

All our jelly roll patterns are 20% off this weekend, no code needed. We have also just received a new batch of All Hallow’s Eve jelly rolls in the shop so we created a few kits and “starter kits” so you can make your own Halloween star quilts for this fall season! Click HERE to head to our shop.
