Blockheads Block #3

Today is week #3 of the MODA BLOCKHEADS 3 QUILT ALONG! Did you enjoy the second block last week? These have been a lot of fun so far and we are looking forward to so many more!

And this is our version of the third block…

This week we mixed it up even a bit more and added in some “non-Fig Tree” reds to our blocks. The result is quite yummy we think.

Once again this time around, we chose a 12″ block not only because we love this block [have used it in several of our samplers] but we thought it lended itself to some larger pieces instead of teeny weeny ones!

And if you know me at all, then you already know we did flying geese for all of these units instead of traditional triangles! I just love the accuracy we get with the SEW&FLIP method [its what we use on all of our patterns]. Since we chose a 12″ size for the block, that would make these flying geese units that we used finish at 1 ½” x 3″//cut 2″ x 3 ½” each.

Outer Units: We cut (4) 2″ x 3 ½” flying geese backgrounds [c] on the outside, (8) 2″ squares [f] and then used the SEW&FLIP method. For the second longer unit underneath, we cut (4) 2″ x 6 ½” from the same red and added the (2) 2″ background squares to each end, using SEW&FLIP again.

For the center Sawtooth Star: We made (4) more flying geese of the same size out of the brighter fabric and added them to the center square [e].

For those of you still wondering about layout, we are doing one of the MODA layouts that haven’t been shared yet. It will for sure require at least (10) of each size 6″, 8″ and 12″. We will do 4″ ones as needed probably closer to the setting date… which won’t be for quite a while :-).

If you are wanting to sew along with us this year, here are the instructions for this week’s block on Betsy’s blog… http://betsysbestquiltsandmore.blogspot.com

A LITTLE BIT OF BACKGROUND

We have had a lot of questions about this already so I thought adding all the info to a blog post might be the best idea…

As you might know, Red and Cream is one of my all time favorite color combos for a quilt. They are perfect for Christmas, for Valentines Day, for Patriotic Holidays and are classic just all around and can always be out if you prefer. Its just a “cant go wrong” combination in my opinion!

So this year when I was invited to participate in the MODA Blockheads Sampler adventure, it wasn’t a hard choice to decide that our palette would be RED AND CREAM. We provided some red and some cream bundles last week and have another one up available for you now. If you are unable to find one, email us and we will see what we can come up with for you!

Explaining the BLOCKHEADS: MODA BLOCKHEADS is a program that is now its 3rd year and basically provides a pattern a week for the entire year. You choose your own palette and choose which patterns you want to make each week and sew along through out the year. Lots and lots of people participate in a huge variety of styles and fabric collections. For those of you who want to follow along in their facebook group, here is the link… https://www.facebook.com/groups/253867175058745/ Just cut and paste it into your browser.

We have never participated before since our schedule is kinda nuts but decided that this would be the year we would give it a whirl and work on our own version of a quilt along with so many others.

So each week we will post our version of the BLOCKHEADS BLOCK for that week here on our blog. We will give you guys any tips that we have for piecing and constructions and we will tell you which of the size options we are making. We have a general layout in mind and we will share that with you guys too once we start so you can see if you want to work along with us. You can of course work along with us and choose your own palette. The world is your oyster!

I have started Block Heads 3 a little late. Thank you much for sharing your stitch and flip measurements. This is my preferred method and you’ve just made my life easier!
