MODA BLOCKHEADS 5: Week 5

This week’s designer is Jenelle Kent of Pieces to Treasure and her block is called SOUTHERN STAR! Be sure to check out her BLOG, where I’m certain she will have all the details and tips on her lovely block.

We changed our SOUTHERN STAR up slightly, to make the star more defined for our Christmas-themed quilt and setting. The best part is that the piecing instructions don’t change much from the provided pattern by Moda Fabrics; it’s still the SEW & FLIP method I love! The difference lies in how many [C] pieces to cut, and where we positioned them within the block. Read on for all the info!

BLOCK #5: SOUTHERN STAR

CHOOSING FABRICS:

We are doing another 6″ block this week, and since last week’s SCRAPPY STAR block used a red star center, we are focusing on a green star this week to keep our quilt “balanced” as we move along. We also chose a red accent fabric that included a bit more white in it to avoid overshadowing the star center. And lastly, with more white space in this block, we did opt for 2 backgrounds to add visual interest and a scrappy touch [our very favorite!].

If you’d like to make yours in a similar feel to ours, follow the instructions below…

CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS:

For the 6″ block you would need:

  • (4) 2 1/2″ ivory solid squares [A]
  • (4) 2 1/2″ low volume cream squares [A]
  • (12) 1 1/2″ red accent squares [B]
  • (8) 1 1/2″ green #1 star points [C]
  • (1) 2 1/2″ green #2 center square [D]

For the 12″ block you would need:

  • (4) 4 1/2″ ivory solid squares [A]
  • (4) 4 1/2″ low volume cream squares [A]
  • (12) 2 1/2″ red accent squares [B]
  • (8) 2 1/2″ green #1 star points [C]
  • (1) 4 1/2″ green #2 center square [D]

PIECING INSTRUCTIONS:

We followed the “color option” alternate version, using the [D] square center. You will follow the directions as shown, adding your corner [B] and [C] units on, except that you will be adding an additional [C] unit to 4 of the [A] squares to create the more defined star center. See our block below for placement!

FABRIC COLLECTIONS:

Red floral: Christmas Stitched
Green leaf: Honeysweet
Green pin dot: Fresh Fig Favorites
Low volume cream: Fresh Fig Favorites
Ivory Solid

Thank you! I think this block goes with a Christmas look better, which is what I am making.
