MODA Blockheads: Block #54

Welcome to Week #54 of the MODA BLOCKHEADS 3 SEW ALONG. Oh my goodness… we are SO CLOSE. This week it the lovely Janet’s turn once again and she is bringing us her Windmill block this time around. And even though we loved here block, we needed more little ones so we decided to make parts of her block instead! THIS MONTH’S BLOCK #54: WINDMILLS So since we needed more 6″ blocks, we decided that Janet’s 12″ block taken apart into sections was the perfect solution. So we made two! We chose two tones of red… make sure that one is significantly lighter than the other so it stands out against it, a small cream print and ivory solid on the outer corners. Here is the PDF DOWNLOAD, CLICK HERE on Janet’s blog to get the block and…

THE CLOVER BLOCK We are working on Block #2 this week, our Clover block, it is appliqué in the quilting sampler so we wanted to find something good to fill in the leaves and have a good result for a beginning embroider-er! We researched embroidery stitches that are commonly used for filling in areas, or for making petals and leaves.  On our practice sample, we tried out a fill satin stitch, a leaf stitch, as well as a granitos.  Who knew there were so…

From the Vault: Paper Roses for Valentine’s Day

Happy Thursday and welcome to another edition of From the Vault! In this new blog series, I’m digging deep into my vault of patterns to find oldies but goodies to update with more recent fabric collections of mine. This month, I’m bringing out Paper Roses. This charm pack-friendly pattern was originally released with my Fresh Cottons collection, way back in 2010! Wow, time goes so quick sometimes. But I think you’ll agree that this fun pattern stands the test of time. My Fresh Cottons collection was inspired by my childhood memories of hanging laundry to dry on clotheslines in the backyard, and the colors I used were taken straight from those memories: crisp apple green, warm milk chocolate brown, soft seafoam blue, sweet strawberry red, sunny butter yellow, and creamy ivory. Those colors used together in the original Paper Roses pattern yielded a quilt with an…

MODA Blockheads: Blocks #52 & #53

Welcome to Week #53 of the MODA BLOCKHEADS 3 SEW ALONG. It feels like I go in groups of 2 these days with everything else we have going on around here [Winter Solstice Sew Along, Stitchery Sampler Sew Along, Embroidery Sew Along, etc. etc]. I hope you are outpacing me or at least ready to work on these next two blocks along with me. We are SO VERY CLOSE to the end of this project… only 3 more after this one! THIS MONTH’S BLOCK #53: BEAR CUBS AROUND THE CAMP FIRE It’s Robin’s day today and this block has such a great feel and such a great name! I love it Robin! For our block, it was a perfect chance to do a little fussy-cut floral in the middle, sashed by a lighter red and a few stronger reds in the bearpaws…

Winter Solstice Sew Along: Week #5

Welcome back to Week 5 of the Winter Solstice Sew Along! While I was designing Winter Solstice, the first aspect of the quilt that came to me was the overall setting. I knew I wanted a blue and cream winter quilt with a hint of a Nordic feel and the large and graphic Bear Paw center seemed the perfect starting point.  I started sketching ideas, and thought how fun it would be to make each quadrant out of four unique blocks, and then the idea of the large and small blocks came into play.  The final step was the pieced border, which seemed to frame the quilt perfectly with a sense of Scandinavia. We hope you have enjoyed sewing along with us these past five weeks.  As we sewed through the Winter Solstice, the spectacular Christmas Star and celebrated a New Year, I hope you found a…

Stitchery Sampler Sew Along: Block #1

Welcome to Block #1 info for our STITCHERY SAMPLER SEW ALONG. If you need background information, please click HERE or HERE. PATTERN INSPIRATION: The pattern itself was created by using simple basic blocks and mimicking a traditional stitched, embroidery sampler. The blocks are meant to mimic stitches. For the blocks that require appliqué, we will share all of our hints and tips for that. For the hexagons, we will learn alongside you. If one of the blocks uses a technique that you don’t wish to tackle, feel free to substitute something else, or double up on a favorite block. FABRIC CHOICES: First to answer a couple of recurring questions… you can use any fabric for this quilt. We created our pattern and sample quilt with our newest collection, Figs & Shirtings. I know at least several of you who plan on making this quilt as a Christmas…
