WEEK TWO: HEARTS

Did any of you guess that from last week’s blog hint? 🙂

Sweet, simple and right in line with the upcoming Valentine’s Day holiday.

The pattern PDF will tell you how many you want to make depending on which size of project you are choosing to make: MINI, RUNNER or LAP THROW.

……

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT 🙂

It might look like there are a lot of SWEET HEART BLOCKS here but there are two reasons for that…

1- I am making the lap throw quilt size so that means that I need 3 rows of hearts!

2- Since this is the most simple of all the blocks in our SEW ALONG, I decided to make it easy on ourselves and use these simple little beauties to be all the filler rows in between the other blocks on the larger quilt versions. Hence all the cute little hearts you see here.

Trust me… you will see how quickly these little sweeties come together!

TIPS/HINTS/SUGGESTIONS

  • Just as we talked about last week, familiarize yourself with the SEW & FLIP METHOD. The SEW & FLIP METHOD has you adding square pieces of fabric together and getting triangles without having to use bias or templates; it’s pretty simple and self-explanatory. Read through the basic steps in the pattern sheet for this week or last week if you need a refresher and look at the detailed diagrams. Also HERE is a more detailed blog description which includes a video tutorial, as well.
  • If you are having any trouble at all with your smaller squares “flipping out” to be the correct size when working with the SEW & FLIP METHOD, try sewing one stitch to the right of your marked line when sewing the two pieces together. Sometimes that is all it takes to get that piece to come all the way out to the corner. Another thing to check would be to make sure you are pressing your pieces all the way out!
  • There is only one noticeable point to match on these little cuties… the top inner heart point. So if you are going to pin anywhere, or at least pay attention anywhere, this is it. The bottom one will need to line up as well, but since it is the bottom of the heart, the worst that can happen is that your heart is a bit rounded on the bottom instead of coming to a point… who says hearts need to be perfect! The rest of the pieces will not line up with anything else do literally… do not worry about them!
  • ADDED TIP FROM SUSAN: This is such a fabulous idea and I don’t know why I didn’t think of it myself! Add your top inner squares first. Join the 2 halves. Then ADD THE OUTER SEW AND FLIP SQUARES LAST, after the halves have already been joined together. That way you don’t have a point to match on the pointy bottom tip of the heart. Genius tip Susan, thank you!

Hello, I have the seasonal patchwork pattern and have done a search on the blog for the heart edition, I can’t find it. It doesn’t come up when I do a search. Could you please help direct me to the right place, so I can get the fabric requirements, and if I need to buy an add on pattern?
    Thanks so much
    Jana
