Hello Fig Tree Friends…
I am so happy to share my newest upcoming fabric collection for MODA fabrics. Every once in awhile, there is a group that just captures my heart before I even see it in person for the first time… and this is one of those collections for me. Introducing FIGS & SHIRTINGS, due in stores in October 2020.
You all probably know that I draw a lot of inspiration from vintage quilts that I find while rummaging through flea markets. On one recent expedition, I spied an antique 1930s quilt that called my name, and from that quilt, Figs & Shirtings was born!
Get comfy, because this post is jam-packed with lots of eye candy and helpful preorder information!
There were so many perfect prints in that quilt that begged to be brought back to life after nearly 100 years…but with a bit of Fig Tree style! FIGS & SHIRTINGS is full of prints that make you think of grandma’s aprons, freshly washed laundry hanging on the line, vintage men’s pajamas, and flour sacks. I’m especially excited about Figs & Shirtings because with it, we’ve debuted new colors and prints for a fabulous “fresh vintage” palette and collection that complements the classic Fig Tree colors you know and love!
OK, you know where “Figs” comes from…but what about “Shirtings”? If you’re a fan of reproduction fabrics, you’re probably already familiar with shirtings. Traditionally, the term refers to fabric with a particular kind of print and often a slightly different weave. In this case, I’m using “shirtings” to describe small, vintage reproduction motifs on cream or ivory backgrounds. There is a wonderful array of them in this collection, in every colorway in the bundle.
The patterns that I created to go with this collection might just be some of my all-time favorites. I’m not sure if it’s the color palette this time around, or if it’s the designs themselves that I love so much…probably a combination of both.
I have all the details for each new pattern listed below, but if you’d prefer to watch my pattern showcase video–which shows lots of detail for each quilt–you can find it here:
There is just something so simple and so classy about these vintage-inspired blocks that makes my quilty heart sing a little. Inspired by a vintage embroidery sampler, each of these 12 blocks resembles an embroidery pattern. Join us later this year as we sew along to this quilt and possibly even stitch along together!
I’m so excited to announce that Moda Fabrics is going to kit Stitchery Sampler in a limited-edition box! These fabulous Moda boxed kits are collector’s items of the best kind. We have had several of our patterns kitted in these boxes and we have always squirreled one of each for ourselves…they are gorgeous!
The kit includes the pattern and all of the fabrics you see for the quilt top and binding. EXCLUSIVELY HERE, our kit also includes a FREE mini charm of Figs & Shirtings fabrics as our way of saying thank you!
I am totally in love with these blocks…they twirl and swirl and float on this quilt, showcasing the fabrics to perfection! Simple sew-and-flip blocks with no special techniques or inset seams mean you can create your own sunflower garden in no time at all.
The kit includes the pattern and all the fabrics you see for the top, including the blocks, background, and binding.
This is the perfect vintage-feeling quilt…all those classic stars and lovely ribbons, in all of their scrappy goodness! And it absolutely doesn’t hurt that it starts off with a Layer Cake and a Charm Pack, giving us a little bit of every single fabric in the whole collection.
The kit includes the pattern and all the fabrics for the top, including the blocks, background, border, and binding.
This is our pieced take on the traditional curved piecing version of this quilt. I have always loved how it looked but never wanted to tackle the curved piecing technique that was required to do it. So this simple sew & flip version was born! This particular pattern was created with the help of our quilting friend Lisa Schweitzer in a contest that we had many years ago. Thank you, Lisa!
I love the feel of six-pointed stars so much! But until now, I have stayed away from them for a pattern because of my well-documented aversion to crazy templates and inset seams! I was very excited to work out a fairly simple way to get the look of the six-pointed star that I wanted without any of those dreaded techniques. With just a few simple measurements, you can make some of these fabulous stars too!
I love mini quilts because a fast finish can be so satisfying, and besides, they are so fun to decorate with! Inspired by a favorite vintage Baltimore Album block, this simple pieced version is the perfect ode to summer in a sweet table topper form!
