This week’s designer is Alexia Marcelle Abegg of Ruby Star Society, and her block is called 16-PATCH STAR.
In case her name sounds familiar to you here on the Fig Tree Blog, it’s because she was featured in the American Patchwork & Quilting February 2024 issue as my conversation partner on the “Modern vs. Traditional” interpretations of quilting [more on that in THIS BLOG POST]. We both took on the LOG CABIN block and just finished a sew along in our FACEBOOK GROUP!

We pieced the 16-patch block as a single unit, and then created (4) flying geese blocks instead of using (8) half square triangles (HSTs)…all of which varies significantly from the directions provided in the MODA pattern sheet for this week. Always do what works best for you!

Cut [D] as directed in the MODA Pattern Sheet for your finished block size. Instead of making 4-patch units (shown in step 2), make the entire 16-patch block, with 4 squares across x 4 squares down. This unit will now measure 3″ finished (6″ block)/6″ finished (12″ block).
Eliminate cutting for [B] and [C]. Instead, using the SEW & FLIP method…
For a 6″ block, cut:
For a 12″ block, cut:
Continue assembly using the diagram in the top left corner of page 1 in the MODA Pattern Sheet as reference.
