THIS WEEK: MAKE (20) MORE BLOCKS

For tips on piecing your blocks, visit the WEEK 2 BLOG POST.

For various setting options, visit the WEEK 3 BLOG POST.

You will want to start paying a bit of attention to your “mix” at this point. Do you have a good mix of tones of colors, do you have a good mix of scale, and do you have a good mix of types of fabrics- florals, geometrics, dots, etc. The more of a variety you have in these items mentioned above, the more interest and sparkle your quilt will have.

This week, we are also delighted to show you a few bonus projects from some lovely Fig Tree friends!

BONUS PROJECTS

From Lacey [@laceypoirier]:
BOWTIE PILLOW – 16″ x 40″

SUPPLIES

  • (12) Vintage Bowtie blocks – I used Denim & Daisies Wovens [shipping August 2024]/Cream Eyelet
  • (2) 2 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ – L/R Borders
  • (2) 2 1/2″ x 40 1/2″ – T/B Borders
  • Backing Fabric Yardage – use your preferred pillow-making method.
  • (3) 2 1/4″ x WOF for Binding

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Make (12) Vintage Bowtie blocks using the pattern on page 98 of the Strawberry Garden Book.
  • Using the “X’s & O’s”-style setting, arrange your (12) bowtie block as depicted in the below mockup, and sew together.

  • Add the L/R borders.
  • Add the T/B borders.
  • Quilt as desired. I opted to do a 1″ diagonal crosshatch on my home machine.
  • Add your backing, using your preferred pillow-making method. I made an envelope back with a vertical opening.
  • Bind.
  • Stuff – I purchased an 18″ x 40″ pillow insert from Amazon to make the pillow appear more “full”.
  • Enjoy!

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Make (12) HALF SIZE Vintage Bowtie blocks using the pattern on page 98 of the Strawberry Garden Book. Click HERE for a refresher on how to resize blocks, along with a DOWNLOADABLE PRINTABLE WORKSHEET to help keep you organized.
  • Sew bowtie blocks together in three rows of four blocks each.

  • From low volume fabric, cut a 12” x 16” backing rectangle. From the remainder of the yardage, cut (2) 2 ½” x 9 ½” (L/R) borders as well as (2) 2” x 16 ½” (T/B) borders.
  • Attach L/R borders to the bowtie panel and then T/B borders.

  • Prepare “Handmade with Love Label” by adhering fusible webbing on the back of the label and trimming the edges with a pinking sheared rotary cutter. Attach the label to the low volume backing by centering the label roughly 2 ¼” down from the top of the panel.

  • Make zipper tabs and prepare zipper according to the directions on page 5 of the Scissor Satchel pattern.
  • Assemble the pouch according to the directions on pages 7-8 of the Scissor Satchel Pattern.
  • To keep pouch rectangular, omit the steps on boxing the corners and bind the inside seams as desired.
  • Attach zipper pull and your pouch is ready for use or gifting!
