Winter Solstice Sew Along: Week #5

Welcome back to Week 5 of the Winter Solstice Sew Along! While I was designing Winter Solstice, the first aspect of the quilt that came to me was the overall setting. I knew I wanted a blue and cream winter quilt with a hint of a Nordic feel and the large and graphic Bear Paw center seemed the perfect starting point. I started sketching ideas, and thought how fun it would be to make each quadrant out of four unique blocks, and then the idea of the large and small blocks came into play.  The final step was the pieced border, which seemed to frame the quilt perfectly with a sense of Scandinavia. We hope you have enjoyed sewing along with us these past five weeks.  As we sewed through the Winter Solstice, the spectacular Christmas Star and celebrated a New Year, I hope you found a few minutes…

Winter Solstice Sew Along: Week #4

Welcome back to the Winter Solstice Sew Along! This week we are sewing our final set of two blocks, Norwegian Star and Orion’s Cluster.  Norwegian Star is an updated version of a classic star block, and would make a fabulous stand-alone quilt…maybe scrappy summer patchwork, or assorted reds and creams for Valentine’s Day?  Orion’s Cluster is the first block I designed for this sew along and I love how the generous overlapping stitch and flips make for crisp star points without extra seams.  I think it adds an extra bit of twinkle to the overall design. Like last week, I encourage you to check the scraps of your background and ivory before cutting this week’s blocks.  You might be able to cut fewer strips and have fewer scraps left over at the end. At the end of this…

Winter Solstice Sew Along: Week #3

Welcome Back Friends! Last week we celebrated the true Winter Solstice.  The moon was a brilliant quarter moon, and the Christmas Star of 2020 shown brightly in the Southwest sky.  The longest day of the year has come and gone with the promise of longer days, and the changing of the seasons. This week’s blocks, Peppermint Star and Snowflake Dance use pinwheels to give the effect of stars twinkling in the night sky.  Don’t let Snowflake Dance intimidate you with all the quarter triangles!  A tip is to lay out your block on a design board before beginning to sew to make sure each of your pinwheels is spinning in the correct direction.  Go slowly, cut accurately, press rather than iron, measure each “unit” and trim if necessary to 2 1/2″ square and you will be set…

Winter Solstice Sew Along: Week #2

Welcome Back Friends! We are so glad you are here, and we are enjoying seeing all of the pictures of Sparkle Dash and Northern lights pop up in our Facebook Group and on Instagram.  Please be sure to tag your post #wintersolsticesewalong and #wintersolsticequilt to make sure we see it!  This week, we will be working on Milky Way and Starburst blocks.  I think both of these blocks go together relatively quickly – perfect for sewing for a few minutes while cookies are in the oven or while waiting for family celebrations to begin. Directions for each block are written so you will cut new background strips for each block.  Feel free to use your scraps from previous blocks first before you cut additional strips.  We can’t wait to see you next week for two new blocks! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BLOCK #3: STARBURST You will be making (2) of each block throughout…

Winter Solstice Sew Along: Week #1

Hello Friends, Welcome Back! A few notes from Susan… This week we are going to start making blocks for our quilt.  For the next four Fridays we will be introducing two new blocks – one a little easier and one a bit more complex.  To finish off the quilt, you will need to make (2) of each of the blocks. For each block, you will need to pick an ivory print as an accent.  Use a favorite from your bundle or feel free to pull from your stash.  I opted to keep some of the larger prints for some of the bigger pieces, and used the smaller prints for some of the more complex blocks. You will want to keep all the ivory prints together until you finish setting your quilt. Our first block, North Star, is a variation on the classic Ohio Star and Sparkle Dash, our second…

WINTER SOLSTICE SEW ALONG

Hello Fig Tree Friends! Hope everyone is enjoying the first few days of December! As all four thoughts start to turn to the holidays and the winter season, we thought it would be fun to work on something winter focused for a few hours each week, So today is officially the beginning of our WINTER SOLSTICE Sew Along that my friend Susan from The Felted Pear and I dreamt up a few months ago. Honestly, it has been so much fun for me to work on a project that is mostly someone else’s beautiful idea and I am the one doing little tweaks and suggestions. It’s a total role reversal for sure and it has been a breath of creative fresh air for me. Thank you Susan for your generous spirit in offering us this Sew Along journey and for your creativity! Love you! Susan is…

Winter Walk in the Woods- Week #1 “Gather Your Goodies”

Welcome to the Winter Walk in the Woods Sew Along!  Thanks so much for joining us as we work our way through this Winter Walk adventure over the next six weeks. I am so glad you have joined us during this “in between week” between Christmas and the New Year… to me, it always feels like a great time to clean up our sewing space a little and start something wintery and new! My friend Susan Vaughan has graciously agreed to lead us on our winter sew along journey for a second year in a row, so let’s get started. From Susan: Last winter, I designed Winter Solstice, a chambray and cream two color quilt.  Its simple, Nordic feel was perfect for the cold winter nights and the feeling of uncertainty we all felt.  Joanna graciously agreed to host a sew along…

MODA Blockheads: Blocks #52 & #53

Welcome to Week #53 of the MODA BLOCKHEADS 3 SEW ALONG. It feels like I go in groups of 2 these days with everything else we have going on around here [Winter Solstice Sew Along, Stitchery Sampler Sew Along, Embroidery Sew Along, etc. etc]. I hope you are outpacing me or at least ready to work on these next two blocks along with me. We are SO VERY CLOSE to the end of this project… only 3 more after this one! THIS MONTH’S BLOCK #53: BEAR CUBS AROUND THE CAMP FIRE It’s Robin’s day today and this block has such a great feel and such a great name! I love it Robin! For our block, it was a perfect chance to do a little fussy-cut floral in the middle, sashed by a lighter red and a few stronger reds in the bearpaws…
