Embroidery Sampler: Block #11

Welcome back to our weekly Embroidery block to accompany our Stitchery Sampler Sew Along. If you would like info on previous blocks, our supplies or general start and embroidery info, scroll back to the previous embroidery posts. The easiest way to do that is to search the word “embroidery” in our search box.

… we love how these actually look like geese flying!

THE WINDMILL BLOCK

We took our inspiration for Week 11’s stitches from the free embroidery download and added some Star Stitches for variety and sparkle. We thought the Star points resembled the blades of the windmill and added some interest to our sampler.

Sophie and I stitched our Stars with four strands of floss.  We paid careful attention to keep the horizontal and vertical lines longer than the two cross stitches to achieve the effect of the star twinkling.  We found that trying to keep our stitches lining up along the same line visually really helped us keep our stitches uniform and cohesive.

While researching videos for our Star Stitch we found that this stitch is a cross between an Algerian Eye Stitch and a common Sashiko Star stitch. Both of those stitches would look equally fabulous if you wanted to try a few different options out before deciding on the perfect one for your sampler.

Next week we will be working on our last square and the week after Sophie and I can not wait to share with you how we plan to finish our samplers off!

Yes, there is a correction that you can choose to make or not… depending on your preference. Please read the blog post about it for Block #12. Or better yet, watch the video and see what you want to do. The update/correction is also on our UPDATES section of the website. Thanks!
