A Scrapbook of Quilts Sew Along: Week #7

Welcome to WEEK #7!!

We are working our way through my latest book, SCRAPBOOK OF FRIENDS, by making pillows for each block featured! Be sure to check out what my partner in crime, Carrie [HERE on Instagram] has to add to the festivities too.

Carrie and I love working together and have really enjoyed collaborating on this book project over the last couple of years but we pretty much always do something a bit different so you will ALWAYS get two perspectives to everything if you follow along with us both!

Also, you will definitely want to see the MODA Blog Post HERE.

WELCOME SPECIAL GUESTS:

We have a NEW GUEST joining us this week. WELCOME ANNA DINEEN from The Wandering Path blog and Instagram.

And of course KIMBERLY JOLLY is whipping up another fabulous pillow and SUSAN VAUGHAN is back too to add to mine and Carrie’s too. Can’t wait to see everyone’s lovely pillow inspirations this week.

As for me… SMALL ROTARY CUTTER ACCIDENT HAS DELAYED ME A BIT. Below is all the info I was able to type in with one hand :-). I have a fun pillow top to shop you but that is as far as I got due to a medium serious rotary cutter accident Monday morning. I am fine but my left hand isn’t going to be doing any sewing or much quick typing for about a week or at least the next few days.

I will post more info later this week or next Tuesday at the latest!!

Some quick bandaging by my quilting friends, a husband who came home from work, a nurse friend from down the street, and a quick visit to urgent care, and I am all bandaged up and ready to go but just not super functional!

THIS WEEK’S THEME AND PILLOW:

Our theme this week is CHRISTMAS and I kind of feel like this NEIGHBORHOOD quilt was made for a Christmas village…

Using (4) Christmas red prints for mine, a bunch of green and cream scraps, and a scrap of tan.

  • To see Kimberly’s pillow [Click HERE or HERE]
  • To see Anna’s pillow [Click HERE].
  • To see Susan’s pillow [Click HERE].

As a quick SUMMARY reminder of how this is working each week:

  1. We are working from our brand new book A SCRAPBOOK OF QUILTS and each week we are featuring one of the blocks in the book through a PILLOW ALONG, where we [and a few of our friends] each sew a different version of a pillow using that week’s block and theme as a way to inspire you to sew some pillows of your own along with us this summer!
  2. Each week Carrie and I will both post a new pillow design or idea on Instagram.
  3. Each week I will also post mine here on the blog and in my Facebook Group.
  4. If you want to see the goodies the above mentioned designers have done, you will need to go to their IG feeds as that is where they are sharing. So excited for what everyone will share each week!

MY PILLOW CHOICE & PATTERN FOR THIS WEEK

This week we are working with Carrie’s NEIGHBORHOOD block in the book.

  • If you are following along, it starts on page 145.
  • I used 4 of my favorite red prints from both of my Christmas Figs collections… it is still my favorite Christmas red! And I added in some cream print scraps as well as a good variety of small scale green scraps for the trees.
  • I used 2 different tiny cream prints for the background and a small tan dot for the doors, chimneys and trunks for my special version.
  • I made 4 house blocks and 4 tree blocks. I might still add a small outer sashing but since I got a little stalled out, I haven’t quite gotten to that part. My final pillow is meant to go on a 24″ pillow… although in all honesty… the longer I look at it, the more I am thinking I might go off script and make it a table topper! I will definitely keep you posted next week!
  • I plan to zigzag quilt it for sure.
  • If I do stick with the pillow plan, I will envelope back it with a red floral and most likely bind it with green

MY PINE TREES

The blocks are straight out of the book but since this is a Christmas flavored project, I decided to morph my trees into some evergreens. Here is the info if you would like to do the same:

  • Cut (24) 1 ¾” x 3″ and (1) 3″ x 3″ center square in a variety of green prints
  • Cut (52) 1 ¾” squares in a variety of cream scraps.
  • Make (24) flying geese using the above pieces and (1) square-in-a-square unit for the center.
  • Cut (4) 1 ¼” x 2 ½” trunks from tan or grey print.
  • Cut (8) 1 ⅜” x 2 ½” from cream prints. Join into trunk sections using the above pieces to make (4) trunk sections as you see in the photos.
  • Make your trees by combining (6) of the flying geese with (1) trunk section. Press to trunk section.
  • Sash the (4) house blocks with the pine trees as shown, with the square in a square in the center.

PILLOW TIPS & HINTS FOR THIS WEEK

PILLOW FINSIHING

More info coming here for this… but my one handed typing energy kind of petered out today :-)! We can’t wait to come back together next week for our final post and to share all of our pillows at once as well as some special prizes too!

WEEKLY PILLOW GIVEAWAY:

Come check out my INSTAGRAM page to follow along on the #pillowalong hashtag and see the announcement of last week’s winner this week! Each week, anyone who posts a photo with some portion of what they are working on for the pillow along and uses the #pillowalong hashtag, will be entered to win a “special prize” from Carrie and/or I.

This week, my winner will also receive a baggie with my leftover autumn ½ square triangles with these exact same fabrics in hopes that they might become someone else’s much-cherished pillow!

THINGS TO EXPECT EACH WEEK

  1. Weekly inspiration by theme. CHRISTMAS THIS WEEK.
  2. Weekly hints and tips. WE WILL TRY TO GO IN THE ORDER YOU WILL NEED TO KNOW ALL THE THINGS IN MAKING A PILLOW. SO THIS WEEK, WE ARE TALKING ABOUT HOW WE FINISH UP OUR PILLOWS.
  3. Weekly prizes. We will have a prize each week on INSTAGRAM and a few here on the BLOG too so stay tuned!
  4. Weekly friendship as we sew pillows together! Since they are pillows and they are small, you can actually finish a pillow each week and have a fabulous collection by the time you are done… really!!

Sounds like a perfect way to spend the summer, don’t you think?

A FEW FAQ THAT I HAVE GOTTEN SEVERAL TIMES SO HERE ARE THE ANSWERS:

How do I enter the GIVEAWAY?

See above for more info. But basically all you have to do is be working on the pillow for that week in some way, post a photo and use the hashtag. It can be anything… from a fabric pull to a few parts sewed to a block, anything really!

Do I have to make pillows to join?

No! if you want to work on one of the quilts in the book as we work on pillows… GO FOR IT and as long as you post to the hashtag, you can still be entered in our weekly giveaways.

What are the hashtags?

If you want us and others to see what you are working on [any progress shots are fine… and of course finished pillow tops or pillows too], then use the hashtags #pillowalong and #scrapbookofquilts

I don’t have the book yet. Is it too late?

No at all. Grab a book and join us. Making pillows is always fun and there are so many projects in this book that you can start with!

Join our FACEBOOK GROUP if you haven’t already [CLICK HERE] as we will be working on it there as well as here on the blog each week.

See you next week for the grand finale!

Joanna and Carrie too… along with Kimberly, Susan, Susan, Anna, Greg, Chelsi and Melissa

Pillow Along has been SO MUCH FUN!! Looking at the stash, which is never perfect, and figuring what size pillow and how much of which fabric and where to put it -and then making it work – has been the BEST color placement lesson! But maybe with you sliced and Carrie out of steam and me two weeks behind, perhaps when you plan for –all of 2022– you could do only once a month? Or a quarterly kit subscription? Or pointers for pillows on our own with your mini patterns maybe?

Hi Phyllis- I am so very glad to hear you have enjoyed the challenge… we felt exactly the same way!
I think we are all done with pillows for now. But certainly might get the itch to do another here or there. Who knows!

Hi! Love the pillows! I was wondering where you got the red check in the spool pillow? It’s so cute! Live the instructions and the “happiness” in this book!!!

Colleen- You are so sweet! The red gingham was from an older Fig Tree line… I can’t even remember which. Maybe Strawberry Fields?

      xoxoxo
