MODA BLOCKHEADS: WEEK #8

Welcome back to Week #8!

Our block pile is growing each week, and slowly the “feel” of our quilt is emerging!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you would like some more background info on the program, how it works or how we are planning on doing our version this year, please scroll back to the previous posts for all kinds of info…
This below is our starter palette and we will be adding creams, reds and greens throughout the program so if you have a chance to add in some of your own from your stash… go for it.
INTRODUCING BLOCK #8: WILD GEESE by Kate Spain
I love the unique feel of this block and how much the title feels like the block itself… so much movement!
HOW WE DID OURS
This was the perfect opportunity to use some favorite pairs. We chose 2 reds and 2 greens. For the center I decided to add one of the red/green multi prints on a cream background to create the center design for a little extra pop to this block.
A couple quick tips on construction:
  • We followed the directions on this one. BUT… if I would have done this block again, I would have simply made (2) flying geese for each of the (4) quadrants. It is always easier to make units with less seams when possible, and this would be a perfect opportunity to do that.
  • As long as I stayed focused on where the center square needed to be as I made each one, I would be fine.
  • The center checkerboard fabric is from Strawberry & Rhubarb.
  • The red scallop stripe is from STITCHED [my newest fabric collection] as well as Beautiful Day.
  • I know that the stripes don’t match up and that might make some of you nuts :-)… but that is just how it ends up sometimes and usually I don’t take a whole lot of extra time to match that because it would take a lot of fussy cutting in this instance. Once the block is in the whole quilt and quilted… it will all be good!
  • The green pumpkin seed is from Fresh Fig Favorites and the speckled green is from Thatched.
  • The background is IVORY SOLID.
Sorry for SETTING POST DELAY. I have had a lot of deadlines that are taking priority. Please be patient and I will get the info up on the blog as soon as I can. The setting can’t be used until the end of the program anyhow so please bear with me.
As a reminder, here is the materials list for our setting:
MATERIALS LIST [25 blocks, 69″ x 69″]
  • 3-4 yds. of ivory solid [depending on which blocks you use this might differ a bit]
  • 2 ½ yds alternate setting fabric [this will include a binding of the same fabric]
  • a good collection of cream, ivory and low volume prints for the sashing and the blocks themselves
  • a good collection of red fabrics in a variety of print, tone and scale [this will be the predominant color in our blocks and the greens will be more of accents
  • a good collection of green fabrics in a variety of print, tone and scale
We will see you guys next Wednesday with Block #8.
