HOW WE DID OURS

Working with a more limited palette sure had its challenges with this week’s block but I think we came up with a solution that worked!

This week Cynthia and I chose (1) red, (1) green, (1) print that had both colors and a plain white on white for the checkerboard background. Just like last week, every once in a while adding in a white on white print for the background, or even a very tiny delicate print like a tiny pindot, really adds interest to a quilt. This time we chose a small floral white on white print for a little extra visual pop. I think it gives the basic checkerboard in the middle some extra pop.

In terms of placement, we knew the center checkerboard would end up “blending” with one of the two colors so just went with it and chose the green to be the dominant color in this block.

A couple quick tips on construction:

  • We pressed our checkerboards to the green print and then pressed the rows open. This made for a completely flat checkerboard ready for assembly.
  • We stayed away from busier or larger prints in this so that you could actually see the checkerboard. using large scale prints is great in many occasions but not when you really want smaller pieces to stand out.
  • The center checkerboard fabric is from Strawberry & Rhubarb.
  • The red dot is from Fresh Fig Favorites.
  • The green is from Pumpkins & Blossoms.
  • The white on white is a MODA Muslin Mates.

Sorry for SETTING POST DELAY. I have had a lot of deadlines that are taking priority. Please be patient and I will get the info up on the blog as soon as I can. The setting can’t be used until the end of the program anyhow so please bear with me.

As a reminder, here is the materials list for our setting:

MATERIALS LIST [25 blocks, 69″ x 69″]

  • 3-4 yds. of ivory solid [depending on which blocks you use this might differ a bit]
  • 2 ½ yds alternate setting fabric [this will include a binding of the same fabric]
  • a good collection of cream, ivory and low volume prints for the sashing and the blocks themselves
  • a good collection of red fabrics in a variety of print, tone and scale [this will be the predominant color in our blocks and the greens will be more of accents
  • a good collection of green fabrics in a variety of print, tone and scale

We will see you guys next Wednesday with Block #8.
